Best Desert Safari Company Abu Dhabi: The Honest Comparison Nobody Else Will Publish: The Short Answer
Seven operators run evening safaris into the Al Khatim dunes. We compared their real published prices, inclusions and fine print, and put our own numbers in the same table.
- How much does a desert safari in Abu Dhabi cost?: Booking direct with us: USD 10 AED 35 self-drive, USD 16.35 AED 60 shared bus from Al Wahda or Mazyad Mall, USD 41 AED 150 shared hotel pickup, USD 190 AED 699 for a private 7-seater car and USD 245 AED 899 for a private Land Cruiser.
- How long is the dune bashing?: Around 40 to 45 minutes with short breaks. Tyres are deflated to roughly 15 psi first so they float on the sand.
- What time does the desert safari start and finish?: Pickup is usually 2:30 to 3:30 PM and you are back in the city around 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Timings follow sunset, so in December pickup moves earlier and in June it moves later.
- Where does the desert safari take place?: At our own DCT-licensed camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, about a 50 to 60 minute drive.
- What is included in the Abu Dhabi desert safari?: Every evening package includes 4×4 dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, a sunset photo stop, Arabic costume for photos, henna for ladies, a full BBQ buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea, a shisha corner, separate washrooms and around eight live shows including tanoura, belly dance and a fire show.
- How do I book?: Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size. We reply with the exact total, no deposit and no booking fee, and you pay at the camp on the day.

Why We Wrote a Comparison That Includes Our Competitors
Search for a desert safari in Abu Dhabi and you will find a dozen websites, each calling itself the best, none explaining what that word actually costs. Booking platforms list the same camps at three different prices. Review sites mix five-star sunsets with one-star horror stories about cold food and pressure-selling. A first-time visitor has no honest map of this market, so we built one.
Yes, we are an operator, and yes, we appear in this comparison. But every claim below about another company comes from that company’s own published website or publicly visible listings, and every claim about us is verifiable on this site, in our WhatsApp confirmations, and in our guest reviews. Where a competitor genuinely does something well, we say so. A comparison you can check is worth more than a boast you cannot.
Here is the single most useful thing this page will tell you: in Abu Dhabi, almost every evening safari ends at a camp in the same Al Khatim desert, under the same sunset, with broadly the same shows. The dunes do not belong to any company. What you are really choosing between operators is (1) how much you pay to reach that camp, (2) what is honestly included once you sit down, and (3) whether anyone pressures you to upgrade after you arrive. Judge every operator, including us, on those three things.

The 6 Tests Every Safari Operator Should Pass (Most Fail at Least Two)
Before the rankings, here is the scoring framework. These six criteria come from reading hundreds of real guest reviews across TripAdvisor, Google, and booking platforms, they are the exact points where safaris go wrong.
- Transparent entry price. Can you see the real starting price on their website without filling a form? Operators hiding prices behind “request a quote” usually charge whatever the market will bear that day.
- Published extras list. The most common complaint in Abu Dhabi safari reviews is being surprised at camp: a falcon photo that suddenly costs money, a “VIP table” pitch over dinner. The honest fix is publishing every optional charge before you book. Count how many operators do.
- Pay on arrival. Prepaying a stranger’s website from another country is the #1 setup for safari fraud in the UAE. Operators confident in their product let you pay when the driver arrives.
- Direct booking, not OTA-first. If a company funnels you to Viator or GetYourGuide, you pay the platform’s 20-30% commission on top. Direct WhatsApp booking removes that entire layer.
- Real pickup choice. Self-drive for residents, shared bus for budget travellers, door-to-door for hotel guests, private car for groups. One-size pricing means someone is overpaying.
- No upgrade pressure at camp. The dinner-table VIP pitch is the industry’s quiet revenue trick. A company that publishes its VIP price (ours is USD 16.35 AED 60 a seat, listed below) has nothing to spring on you.

Best Desert Safari Company Abu Dhabi: The Operator Comparison Table
Entry prices below are each operator’s own lowest published evening-safari price at the time of writing, taken from their public websites and listings. Platform prices are what the same class of experience costs when booked through major OTA listings for Abu Dhabi.
Sources: each operator’s public website and public OTA listings for Abu Dhabi evening safaris. Competitor prices change; check their sites for current figures. We update this table monthly.

The Verdicts: Who Is Actually Best: and For Whom
Royal Arabian Safari
We hold this position on one argument: you can verify everything before you pay anything. Prices are published, the extras list is published, the timeline is published, and payment happens when the driver arrives, not before. The evening itself runs 8 hours: pickup from 3:00 PM, dune bashing in 4×4 vehicles, the camel ride, sandboarding, henna, the shisha corner, starters at 6:30 PM, then a BBQ buffet while 8 live shows rotate through the stage, belly dance, LED Tanoura, fire show, puppet show and more.
Xtreme Sightseeing Tourism
Credit where due: Xtreme is the longest-established large operator in this market, with a polished online checkout and a big review footprint. If you specifically want to prepay by card on a website and pay a premium for that workflow, they execute it well. The trade-off is price, their packages start around the USD 68 AED 250 mark, several times the direct entry price for what is, at camp level, a comparable evening in the same desert.
Emirates Tours & Safari and other premium operators
Operators in this tier do a solid job for corporate groups and travellers who want a managed, invoice-friendly experience. Expect to pay premium-tier prices and to encounter quote-based pricing on some tours rather than a number on the page. Fine for company bookings; an overspend for a couple who just want the sunset and the BBQ.
OTA listings, concierge desks, and anonymous budget sellers
Three different problems share this tier. OTA platforms resell local operators with a 20-30% commission baked in, you pay USD 49–82 AED 180–300 for evenings that cost USD 14–41 AED 50–150 direct. Hotel concierge desks add their own margin on top of an operator’s rate. And anonymous social-media sellers are where the genuine horror stories come from: no licence, no published identity, no accountability when the van never arrives. If a deal exists only inside a chat thread and asks for a transfer to a personal account, walk away.

What the Winning Evening Actually Looks Like
These are real photographs from our camp and dunes, not stock images. This is the product the comparison table is pricing.

Forget the Spreadsheet for One Minute: Here Is What You Are Actually Buying
Comparison tables decide which company you message. They do not describe the moment the 4×4 vehicle noses over the first ridge and your stomach lifts as forty metres of golden slope opens under the windscreen, that sound your own laugh makes when it surprises you. They do not describe the smell of the desert at 6 PM: warm sand, a thread of charcoal smoke from the BBQ pits drifting over the dunes before you can even see the camp.
You will stand on a ridge while the sun drops and watch your own shadow stretch thirty feet across untouched sand. Someone in your group will go quiet, someone always does. Later there is the weight of a falcon settling onto your gloved arm, lighter than you expect and somehow heavier too. The first sweet pull of apple shisha in the corner majlis. The drummers starting up just as the last blue leaves the sky, and the fire performer’s first plume going up with a sound like a flag snapping.
Every operator in the table above is selling some version of that evening. The reason price honesty matters is simple: nothing ruins that memory faster than discovering, at the dinner table, that the photo you just took costs money nobody mentioned. So here is everything, priced, in public.

The Full Price Sheet: Including Every Optional Extra
Packages (per person unless stated)
Included free in every package
- Dune bashing in AC 4×4 vehicles
- Short camel ride
- Sandboarding on the big slopes
- Basic henna design
- Shisha corner (dedicated majlis area)
- Starters served at 6:30 PM, then full BBQ buffet, veg and non-veg
- 8 live shows: belly dance, LED Tanoura, fire show, puppet show and more
- Arabic costumes for photos
- Unlimited water, tea, coffee, soft drinks
- Separate washrooms for men and women
Optional extras: published now so nothing surprises you at camp
That table is the entire money conversation. If anyone at any camp, ours or a competitor’s, quotes you a price that is not on a published list, you are inside the exact mechanism that generates the one-star reviews.
Lock This Week’s Rate on WhatsAppThe 5 Red Flags of a Bad Safari Operator (From Real Guest Complaints)
1. The price exists only in chat. If there is no published rate anywhere, the rate is whatever you look like you can pay.
2. Full payment to a personal account before the trip. Licensed operators never need a bank transfer to an individual’s name. This is the signature of the fake-operator scam that UAE travel forums warn about constantly.
3. “Everything included” with no list. Vague inclusion promises are how guests end up paying for soft drinks they were told were unlimited. Demand the itemised list, you have ours above.
4. The camp upgrade ambush. If the first time you hear about VIP seating is when a staff member leans over your dinner, the operator planned it that way. Published upgrade prices kill this trick.
5. No physical location, no licence number, no named people. A safari company that exists only as a website and a phone number can disappear the same way.
The 8-Hour Evening, Hour by Hour
This is the schedule the comparison is pricing, identical structure across our packages, so an USD 16.35 AED 60 guest and an USD 190 AED 699 private group share the same desert and the same stage.
The Shows Your Ticket Includes: All Eight, No Surcharge

The Booking-Platform Math Nobody Shows You
Here is the arithmetic behind the comparison table, because numbers persuade better than adjectives. A family of four browsing a major booking platform sees an Abu Dhabi evening safari at roughly USD 60 AED 220 per person, a typical mid-range listing. Total: USD 240 AED 880, paid in full, online, today, to a platform headquartered on another continent. If plans change inside the cancellation window, the refund takes days; outside it, the money is gone.
The same family messaging a direct operator pays USD 41 AED 150 per person with door-to-door hotel pickup, USD 218 AED 800 total, and pays it to the driver on arrival. The saving is USD 131 AED 480: enough to cover the Louvre Abu Dhabi for the whole family the next morning, with lunch. Same desert. Same sunset. Same BBQ smoke drifting over the same dunes. The USD 131 AED 480 difference bought nothing except the platform’s commission and a prepayment risk.
Scale that to a group of seven and the private option changes the math again: one USD 190 AED 699 4×4 vehicle works out to USD 23 AED 85.57 per person, cheaper per head than the shared hotel-pickup rate, with a private vehicle, your own music, and a driver who stops wherever your camera wants. Groups almost never discover this on platforms, because platforms price per seat, not per vehicle.
When a platform IS the right choice
Honesty cuts both ways: if you want card payment, buyer-protection paperwork, and an English-language refund process managed by a large company, and you are happy paying roughly double for it, a platform booking is a rational choice. Corporate travellers expensing the trip often prefer it. Just make the choice knowing what the premium buys: process, not product.
How to Verify Any Safari Operator in 5 Minutes (Including Us)
Use this on every company you shortlist tonight. It filters out the anonymous resellers that generate the UAE’s safari horror stories, and it takes less time than reading one more review thread.
- Minute 1: find the published prices. Open their website. If the entry price and the extras prices are not visible without a form or a chat, note that. Ours are in the tables above.
- Minute 2: check the payment model. Message them: “Can I pay on arrival?” A confident operator says yes. A reseller with no vehicles must collect first, because their margin is the gap between what you pay and what the real operator charges them.
- Minute 3: ask where exactly the camp is. A real operator gives coordinates or a pin instantly, ours is Al Khatim, GPS 24.1302, 54.6136. A middleman has to go ask someone.
- Minute 4: ask one specific operational question. “What time are starters served?” (Ours: 6:30 PM.) “How many shows?” (Ours: eight.) Resellers answer in vague brochure language; operators answer like people who were at the camp last night.
- Minute 5: scan reviews for the word “extra”. Search any operator’s reviews for “extra charges” or “upgrade”. The pattern you find, or do not find, tells you exactly how dinner will go.
Any company that passes all five checks, competitor or not, will give you a good evening. The desert does most of the work; the operator’s job is simply not to spoil it.
The Right Booking for Your Exact Situation
UAE residents with a car
Self-drive at USD 10 AED 35 is the unbeatable play. The drive to Al Khatim takes about 40 minutes from the city on the E22, parking at the meeting point is straightforward, and you keep total control of your departure time. Many resident families do this monthly, it costs less than a cinema trip and ends with a fire show.
Tourists staying in Abu Dhabi hotels
Hotel pickup at USD 41 AED 150 is the sweet spot. Door-to-door, no navigation, no rental car sand-damage clauses, and the 4×4 vehicle that collects you is the same one that takes you over the dunes. From Yas Island, Saadiyat, the Corniche, or downtown, the pickup window is 2:30-3:30 PM.
Budget travellers and backpackers
The USD 16.35 AED 60 shared bus from central pickup points is the cheapest way into the desert without your own wheels. You trade door-to-door convenience for a 50% saving; everything at the camp is identical.
Groups of 5-6, celebrations, photographers
The USD 190 AED 699 private 4×4 vehicle. Per-person it beats the shared rate at full occupancy, and it buys the things shared vehicles cannot: extra photo stops on the ridge, a gentler drive if someone is nervous, a wilder one if nobody is, and a schedule that bends to your golden hour instead of the bus’s.
Visitors who should NOT book an evening safari at all
Genuine advice: if you are pregnant, recovering from back or heart issues, or travelling with a baby under one, the standard dune-bashing format is wrong for you, with any company. Ask us on WhatsApp about the direct-to-camp arrangement instead: all of the camp, the dinner, and the shows, none of the G-force. An operator that tries to sell you the standard package anyway is optimising for revenue, not for you.
What Guests Say After Comparing Operators Themselves
“I spent two days comparing safari companies before our trip and almost paid USD 76 AED 280 each on a booking site. Found Royal Arabian Safari, paid USD 41 AED 150 each with hotel pickup, and honestly could not find a single thing the expensive listing had that this didn’t. The price list they sent on WhatsApp matched everything at the camp exactly. The fire show was unreal.”
, Daniel R., United Kingdom“What won me over was pay on arrival. Every other company wanted full payment online to a website I had never heard of. Here the driver arrived at our hotel on time, we paid him directly, and the whole evening from dune bashing to the LED Tanoura was exactly as described. No surprise charges, the VIP seats were offered once with the price and zero pressure.”
, Ayesha K., visiting from IndiaQuestions People Ask Before Choosing an Operator
Which desert safari company in Abu Dhabi is the cheapest?
For direct booking, Royal Arabian Safari’s USD 10 AED 35 self-drive entry (currently the USD 13 AED 47 list rate) is the lowest published price in the Abu Dhabi market today. The cheapest with transport included is the USD 16.35 AED 60 shared bus pickup. Anything on a major booking platform for under USD 41 AED 150 is rare; USD 49–82 AED 180–300 is typical there for the same class of evening.
Are all the Abu Dhabi desert camps in the same place?
Almost all evening safaris operate in the Al Khatim desert region off the E22, roughly 40 minutes from the city, where the mega-dunes rise 80-100 metres. The dunes and sunset are shared geography; the camp quality, food, and pricing honesty are where operators differ.
Is it safe to book a desert safari on WhatsApp?
It is safe when the operator has a published business identity, a real camp location, public reviews, and, critically, lets you pay on arrival. It is unsafe when an anonymous seller demands prepayment to a personal account. The payment model is the tell, not the chat app.
Why are booking-platform prices so much higher for the same safari?
Platforms charge operators commissions that typically run 20-30%, and listings price accordingly. You are not buying a better safari at USD 68 AED 250 on a platform; you are buying the same desert plus the platform’s margin and an inflexible prepayment.
Do expensive operators have better camps?
Premium operators often have polished booking systems and corporate service layers, which genuinely matter for company events. For the core evening, dunes, sunset, BBQ, shows, the experience across licensed operators is far more similar than the 5x price spread suggests. Pay for what you will actually use.
Can I book today for tonight?
Yes, message us on WhatsApp before 1:30 PM and same-evening seats are usually possible, subject to availability. Confirmation arrives in minutes.
How often is this comparison updated?
Monthly. Competitor prices, platform listing ranges, and our own rates are re-checked at the start of each month, and the “last verified” date in the summary box at the top of this page reflects the most recent audit. If you spot a published price that has changed before we do, message us on WhatsApp and we will correct it, the entire value of this page rests on it staying accurate, and we treat reader corrections as free quality control. No comparison written by an operator is neutral, including this one; the most honest thing we can do is keep every number checkable and every claim sourced, and let you verify the lot in the five minutes described above before you spend a single dirham with anyone.
You Have the Full Comparison. The Desert Is 40 Minutes Away.
Message us with your date and group size. You will get the exact price, the exact pickup time, and the full extras list in one reply, and you will not pay a dirham until our driver is standing in front of you.

Booking mechanics, what counts as your ticket, and the mark-ups ticket platforms add are broken down on our Abu Dhabi desert safari tickets page.
Not sure which format suits you? All eleven of our Abu Dhabi desert safari tours are compared on one page, with prices and durations.
If you would rather look before you book: a 360° virtual tour of our camp, drone footage of the dunes we use, and what a licensed tour operator should be able to show you on request.
What is included in the Abu Dhabi desert safari?
Every evening package includes 4×4 dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, a sunset photo stop, Arabic costume for photos, henna for ladies, a full BBQ buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea, a shisha corner, separate washrooms and around eight live shows including tanoura, belly dance and a fire show.
How much does a desert safari in Abu Dhabi cost?
Booking direct with us: USD 10 AED 35 self-drive, USD 16.35 AED 60 shared bus from Al Wahda or Mazyad Mall, USD 41 AED 150 shared hotel pickup, USD 190 AED 699 for a private 7-seater car and USD 245 AED 899 for a private Land Cruiser. Agencies and hotel desks typically charge USD 49 AED 180 to 250 per person for the same evening because they add commission on top of an operator price.
What time does the desert safari start and finish?
Pickup is usually 2:30 to 3:30 PM and you are back in the city around 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Timings follow sunset, so in December pickup moves earlier and in June it moves later.
Where does the desert safari take place?
At our own DCT-licensed camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, about a 50 to 60 minute drive. The Al Khatim ridges rise over 100 metres, which is considerably taller than the roadside dunes some operators use, and there is far less traffic on the sand.
How do I book?
Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size. We reply with the exact total, no deposit and no booking fee, and you pay at the camp on the day. Free cancellation applies up to 12 hours before.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes on the USD 41 AED 150 shared pickup, the USD 190 AED 699 private car and the USD 245 AED 899 Land Cruiser, covering the whole city including the Corniche, Al Maryah, Al Reem, Downtown, Khalifa City, Mussafah, Yas Island, Saadiyat, Shabiya and the airport. The USD 16.35 AED 60 package departs from Al Wahda Mall or Mazyad Mall, and USD 10 AED 35 is self-drive using a GPS pin we send you.
Do I need a 4×4 for the self-drive option?
No. You drive on tarmac to a meeting point, so any standard car or rental reaches it comfortably. Our team takes over there in a proper 4×4 for the dune bashing.
How long is the dune bashing?
Around 40 to 45 minutes with short breaks. Tyres are deflated to roughly 15 psi first so they float on the sand. Intensity is adjustable at any point, tell your driver you want it gentle and it becomes a scenic drive.
Is dune bashing safe?
Yes with a licensed operator. Every passenger wears a seatbelt, vehicles are maintained and insured, drivers are trained specifically for dune driving, and vehicles travel in convoy so recovery is immediate. You can ask to stop at any time.
Can I do the safari without dune bashing?
Yes. Book self-drive and come straight to the camp, or ask for a direct transfer on a private car. You still get the sunset, camel ride, sandboarding, dinner and every show.
What food is served at the camp?
A full BBQ buffet: salads and mezze including fattoush, hummus and Arabic bread; rice dishes, dal, pasta and mixed vegetable sabzi; chicken tikka, shish taouk, lamb seekh kebab and fish from the grill; Om Ali and fresh fruit. All 100% halal with unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea.
Are vegetarian and special diets catered for?
Vegetarian options are always available and the whole buffet is halal. Vegan, Jain, gluten-free and allergy requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.
Is alcohol available?
No. Alcohol is not served or permitted at our camp. Unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea are included, and shisha is available at the camp.
What should I wear?
Loose, light-coloured clothing covering shoulders and knees, and closed shoes you do not mind filling with sand. From October to April bring a jacket, camp temperatures drop to 13 to 22 degrees after sunset.
Is the safari suitable for children?
Yes, from about age three. Ask for gentle dune bashing when you book, bring closed shoes and a spare set of clothes, and pack a warm layer from November to March.
Can I add quad biking or a buggy?
Yes. Quad bikes are USD 27 AED 100 single seater and USD 41 AED 150 double, the Can-Am buggy is from USD 218 AED 800 for 30 minutes, VIP majlis seating is +USD 16.35 AED 60 per person, the falcon photo is USD 3–8 AED 10–30 and professional photography starts at USD 16.35 AED 60. Nothing is required and nothing is upsold under pressure at the camp.
What is the best time of year for a desert safari?
November to March gives the most comfortable conditions. October and April are excellent value. From May to September the morning safari is more comfortable than the evening one.
Is there a morning safari option?
Yes. The morning safari is a private premium product at USD 218 AED 799 per car for up to 7 guests and does not include dinner or the live shows.
What happens if it rains?
Abu Dhabi averages fewer than ten rainy days a year, almost all December to March. Light rain does not stop the safari. If heavy rain would genuinely spoil the experience we move your date at no cost.
Are there toilets at the camp?
Yes. Clean, separate washrooms for men and women, plus a prayer space, lighting and seating for every guest.

If we have to cancel, what happens?
A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.
If we have to cancel your booking, for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness, we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.
If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way: nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
