Louvre Abu Dhabi: Quick Answers
- How much are tickets?
- Standard adult admission is paid, with reduced and free categories (children, and certain residents/dates). Prices are set by the museum and change, buy official at face value. We never resell or mark up tickets.
- Is there a free day?
- The museum runs free-entry categories and occasional free dates rather than a fixed weekly free day, check the official calendar for your date, or ask us on WhatsApp while planning and we will check that week for you.
- Is the Louvre Abu Dhabi worth it?
- Yes, it is the single strongest indoor sight in the capital: Jean Nouvel’s floating dome, the rain of light, and a collection that walks you through every civilisation at once.
- How long do you need?
- Two to three hours for the galleries and the dome plaza; add the art lounge or a kayak under the dome if the day allows.
- When is the best time?
- Weekday mornings for quiet galleries; late afternoon for dome light. Summer visits pair it with teamLab for a full indoor day.
- How does it fit a city tour?
- It is the anchor of the Saadiyat chapter on our full-day routes, mosque first, Louvre before the crowd, Mamsha lunch, and the car waiting at each door for one per-car price.
Quick answer: A Louvre Abu Dhabi adult ticket costs around USD 19 / AED 70. It is not free, but children under 18 enter free (tickets collected on site), and the outdoor plaza and the famous dome are free to visit without any ticket at all. The museum is closed every Monday. Galleries typically close 18:30 Tuesday–Thursday and 20:30 Friday–Saturday, with earlier last entry. Self-parking is free; valet is paid. Allow 2–3 hours. There is no dress code. The museum opened in November on Saadiyat Island under a thirty-year agreement with France. Jean Nouvel’s dome is 180 metres across and weighs roughly 7,500 tonnes, comparable to the Eiffel Tower, yet appears to float on four hidden piers. It is built from eight superimposed layers of geometric stars that scatter the famous “rain of light”. The collection is arranged chronologically, not by civilisation. It sits about 20 km (25 min) from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and 140 km (~90 min) from Dubai. We do not sell Louvre tickets and take no commission on them, we sell the private car that gets you there, from USD 190 / AED 699 per vehicle. WhatsApp +971 58 228 2683.
The most common wasted trip in Abu Dhabi. People drive 140 km from Dubai and find the doors shut. Check before you go.
Louvre Abu Dhabi tickets and price
A standard adult ticket costs approximately USD 19 / AED 70. Here is what that actually buys, and what you can get without paying at all.
| Who / what | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ~USD 19 / AED 70 | Gallery entry |
| Children under 18 | FREE | Tickets must still be collected on site |
| Museum members | FREE | Plus exclusive events |
| Outdoor plaza & dome | FREE | No ticket needed at all |
| Express guided tour | ~USD 16.35 / AED 60 | Ages 18+ · sold by the museum |
| Self parking | FREE | Valet parking is paid |
The under-18 rule almost nobody knows
Children under 18 enter Louvre Abu Dhabi free. A family of two adults and three children pays for two tickets, not five. Their tickets still need to be collected on site, but you are not paying for them.
This makes the Louvre one of the best-value family attractions in Abu Dhabi, a family of five gets in for around USD 38 / AED 140 total, against roughly USD 470 / AED 1,725 for the same family at Ferrari World.
We do not sell Louvre Abu Dhabi tickets. Not through us, not bundled, not at a markup. We take no commission on your ticket. Buy directly from the museum. Operators and resellers who bundle attraction tickets buy them at a trade rate and resell at a margin, we would rather charge you honestly for the car and let you pay the museum. The same policy applies to Qasr Al Watan and Ferrari World.
Is Louvre Abu Dhabi free? What is free and what is not
People search this constantly, and the answer is genuinely interesting: the most famous part of the Louvre Abu Dhabi is free.
| What | Free? | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| The outdoor plaza | FREE | Walk in without a ticket |
| Standing under the dome | FREE | The “rain of light”: the thing everyone photographs |
| The waterfront and exterior | FREE | The building from the outside |
| Children under 18 | FREE | Full gallery access |
| Self parking | FREE | , |
| The galleries (the art) | USD 19 / AED 70 | Adults only pay |
| Express guided tour | ~USD 16.35 / AED 60 | Optional |
| Valet parking | Paid | Self-parking is free |
If your budget is tight: go to the plaza, stand under the dome, watch the light fall through eight layers of stars, photograph it, and leave. It costs nothing, and it is the single most memorable thing about the building. The art is a bonus, not the headline.
See our free things to do in Abu Dhabi guide for everything else in the city that costs nothing, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is entirely free.

Louvre Abu Dhabi opening hours: and the Monday problem
Louvre Abu Dhabi is closed every Monday. We are putting this in a red box because it is the most common wasted trip in Abu Dhabi. People drive 140 km from Dubai, arrive on a Monday, and find the museum shut. It is a three-hour round trip for nothing.
| Day | Galleries | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | CLOSED | Do not go |
| Tuesday – Thursday | Close 18:30 | Last entry is earlier |
| Friday – Saturday | Close 20:30 | The best evenings to visit |
| Sunday | Open | Check hours on the day |
| Ramadan / public holidays | Vary | Always verify |
Last entry is earlier than closing time, typically well before the galleries shut, so do not arrive thirty minutes before close and expect to get in. Check the official Louvre Abu Dhabi website on the day you plan to visit. We deliberately have not printed a precise minute-by-minute timetable here, because a stale one would mislead you and cost you a day.
The best time to visit
Friday or Saturday evening. The galleries stay open until 20:30, the light through the dome shifts as the sun drops, and the crowds thin after 17:00. The dome after dark, lit from within, is a completely different building.
The dome, and the “rain of light”
This is what you actually come for, and, as above, you can see it for free from the outdoor plaza.

Louvre Abu Dhabi was designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel and opened in November on Saadiyat Island, under a thirty-year agreement with France that licenses the Louvre name and lends works from thirteen French institutions.
The numbers
- The dome is 180 metres in diameter.
- It weighs roughly 7,500 tonnes, comparable to the Eiffel Tower.
- Despite that mass, it appears to float: it rests on just four permanent piers, hidden inside the galleries and spaced 110 metres apart, so no support is visible from beneath.
- It is constructed from eight superimposed layers of geometric star patterns, four outer, four inner, in aluminium and stainless steel.
- Sunlight filters through the gaps between them and falls onto the plaza below in a constantly shifting pattern that Nouvel called the “rain of light”, inspired by sunlight passing through overlapping palm fronds in an oasis.
The museum sits partly on the water, designed as a “museum city” of 55 individual buildings, a reinterpretation of a low-rise Arab medina, with seawater channels running between them. Stand still under the dome for ten minutes and watch the pattern move. That is the exhibit.
The collection: and why it is arranged strangely
Here is the thing that makes Louvre Abu Dhabi genuinely different from other museums, and most visitors do not notice it until it is pointed out.
The collection is arranged chronologically, not by civilisation. Almost every major museum in the world groups its holdings geographically, the Egyptian rooms, the Greek rooms, the Asian rooms. Louvre Abu Dhabi does not. It puts everything humanity was making at the same time in the same room, regardless of where.
So you walk from Mesopotamia to the present in a single line, and you see, side by side, what was happening in China, in the Mediterranean, in the Islamic world and in Europe simultaneously. It is a deliberate argument about shared human history rather than separate ones, and it is the closest thing the building has to a thesis.
It is also the reason to take your time. If you walk it in an hour you will simply see objects. If you walk it in two, you will start to see the point.
What is in it
- Works loaned from thirteen French institutions, including the Louvre in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay and the Centre Pompidou.
- Its own permanent acquisitions, spanning prehistory to contemporary art.
- Rotating temporary exhibitions, check what is on before you go, as these change.
- The Children’s Museum, with exhibitions designed specifically for young visitors.

Louvre Abu Dhabi with children
Children under 18 go free. That single fact makes this one of the best-value family attractions in the emirate.
| Family of 2 adults + 3 children | Total cost |
|---|---|
| Louvre Abu Dhabi | ~USD 38 / AED 140 (adults only) |
| Qasr Al Watan | ~USD 89 / AED 325 (approx, before child rates) |
| Ferrari World | ~USD 470 / AED 1,725 |
| Warner Bros. World | ~USD 647 / AED 2,375 |
There is also a dedicated Children’s Museum within the Louvre with exhibitions designed for young visitors. Note that the Express guided tour is 18+, so it is not an option for the family.
Is Louvre Abu Dhabi worth visiting?
Yes: and the building alone justifies the USD 19 / AED 70.
Be honest with yourself about what you are going for. If you want to see the Mona Lisa, this is not that Louvre and you will be disappointed. If you want to see one of the most remarkable pieces of architecture built this century, and a collection arranged around an idea rather than a geography, it is outstanding.
| Go if… | Skip it if… |
|---|---|
| You care about architecture at all | You expect the Paris collection |
| You have 2–3 hours | You have under 90 minutes |
| You are travelling with under-18s (they go free) | Your trip is entirely theme-park focused |
| You want the best-value cultural afternoon in the city | It is a Monday (it is closed) |
And remember: the dome and plaza are free. Even if you decide the galleries are not for you, the outdoor part is worth the drive on its own.
The architecture: why the dome floats
Most visitors photograph the dome without understanding what they are looking at, and the engineering is the story.
Four piers, 110 metres apart
A 7,500-tonne dome, 180 metres across, appears to hover above the museum with no visible support. It is not an illusion of perspective, the dome genuinely rests on only four permanent piers, and each one is concealed inside a gallery building. They are spaced 110 metres apart, which means that from the plaza, from the water, and from almost every angle a visitor will ever stand at, you cannot see what is holding it up.
During construction the dome was supported by a temporary scaffold and then, once complete, the supports were removed and the entire structure settled onto its four points. That moment, a 7,500-tonne roof taking its own weight for the first time, is the sort of thing engineers talk about for decades.
The eight layers
The dome is not solid. It is made of eight superimposed layers of geometric star patterns, four outer layers in stainless steel, four inner in aluminium, each rotated slightly relative to the others. The gaps never quite line up, which is the entire point.
Sunlight passes through all eight layers and emerges as thousands of individual beams that shift as the sun moves. Nouvel called it the “rain of light”, and the reference is specific: sunlight falling through overlapping palm fronds in an oasis. It is a Gulf idea executed with French engineering, which is more or less the museum’s whole thesis.
A museum city, not a museum building
Beneath the dome is not one building but 55 separate ones, galleries, a children’s museum, a café, a boutique, laid out as a low-rise cluster with narrow lanes and open plazas between them, and seawater channels running through it. It is a deliberate reinterpretation of an Arab medina, and it means walking round the Louvre feels like walking through a small town rather than down a corridor.
Take fifteen minutes to walk the outside before you go in. It is free, and it is half the building.
How we fit in: and what we do not sell
We are a DCT-licensed UAE tour operator, 4.9★, 5,000+ guests, and we sell exactly one thing: a private vehicle with a driver-guide, priced per car, from USD 190 / AED 699.
- We do not sell Louvre Abu Dhabi tickets. You buy your own, at face value, from the museum.
- We take no commission on your ticket, not a dirham.
- We drive you to Saadiyat Island, park (free), and wait as long as you want.
- We will tell you if it is a Monday. Which, judging by how often people arrive to a closed museum, is worth more than it sounds.
- Per-vehicle pricing. Six people pay what one pays.
- No booking fee, no prepayment. Pay the driver on the day.
If you can get yourself to Saadiyat Island, you do not need us. Take a taxi, buy your ticket, park for free, and have an excellent afternoon. This page works perfectly well as a free planning guide, that is deliberate.
