Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Tour: What to Know Before You Go
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the one stop in Abu Dhabi that no visitor should skip, and it rewards a little preparation. It sits about 10 km from the city centre, opens to visitors of every faith, and takes about 75 minutes to walk properly. Our private half-day tour puts you at the gate around 9:00 AM, before the 10:00 crowd, with the entry fee already paid, then carries on to Emirates Palace and the Corniche.
What you will actually see inside
The reflective pools and 82 white domes
The white marble courtyard doubles as a mirror. Stand at the far end of the pools and the domes and four minarets double themselves in the water. It is the picture on every postcard, and it looks best in soft morning light.
The main prayer hall
Take your shoes off and step onto one of the largest hand-knotted carpets in the world, under crystal chandeliers. The room is built for thousands of worshippers, and the quiet is part of the experience, so keep voices low.
The floral marble mosaics of the courtyard
Look down. The courtyard floor is inlaid with flowers in coloured stone, and most people walk across it without noticing. Early visitors get it nearly empty.
The colonnades and the golden light
The long arcades keep you in shade while the domes catch the sun. Late in the day the lighting around the domes changes colour, which is why some guests ask us to time the visit for the evening.
Emirates Palace photo stop
Ten minutes at the gates for photographs after the mosque. Worth it for the frontage and the shoreline; there is no need to go in unless you plan to eat there.
The Corniche and Etihad Towers viewpoint
A slow drive along the waterfront and a pause for the skyline, so the morning ends with Abu Dhabi as a city rather than only a monument.
Three things a local driver tells every guest
- Arrive between 9:00 and 9:30 AM. The tour groups land around 10:00, and the courtyard photographs are far cleaner before them.
- Dress at the hotel, not at the gate. The free abaya loan exists, but the queue can be long in peak season, and our guests who arrive covered walk straight through.
- Bring nothing you cannot carry in. No food or drink inside, no smoking, and young children stay with a parent at all times.
Half-Day Mosque Tour in Abu Dhabi: Hour by Hour
This is the usual shape of the morning. Your driver adjusts it to your hotel, your group and the crowd on the day.
- 8:30 AMPickup from your Abu Dhabi hotel or address in a private air-conditioned car.
- 9:00 AMArrive at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, ahead of the main wave of coaches. Parking is free and the entry fee is already covered.
- 9:15 AMCollect an abaya or headscarf if you need one, shoes off, and walk through the colonnades into the courtyard.
- 9:30 AMThe pools, the domes, the mosaics and the prayer hall, at your own pace. Allow about 75 minutes.
- 10:45 AMPhoto stop at Emirates Palace.
- 11:15 AMSlow drive along the Corniche, with a pause at the Etihad Towers viewpoint.
- 12:30 PMBack at your hotel, or dropped at the next place you want to be.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Tour Price: What You Pay, Per Car
Every price below is for the whole private car, not per person, and the mosque entry fee is already inside it. Compare that with turning up alone, where you pay the entry fee on top of getting there and back.
The same figures in dirhams are on the cards above: AED 699, 899, 799, 1,050, 899, 1,099 and 1,499. The full breakdown, including add-ons, is on our Abu Dhabi city tour price page.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Dress Code: Jeans, Shorts and Headscarves
The rule is simple: cover everything except face, hands and feet, in clothing that is loose, long and not see-through. Shorts, short skirts, sleeveless tops and tight leggings are refused at the gate, and so are jeans that cling. Loose, full-length trousers are fine. Women wear a headscarf; men do not need one but should wear long trousers and a shirt with sleeves.
If you arrive unprepared, the mosque lends an abaya for free, but the queue for it can run long in peak season, which is why we tell guests to dress at the hotel. Shoes come off before the prayer hall, so wear something easy to slip on.
Opening Hours, Tour Times and How Long a Visit Takes
The mosque welcomes visitors Saturday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM. On Fridays it opens to visitors from 9:00 to 11:30 AM, closes for the main prayer, and reopens from 2:30 to 8:30 PM. Hours can change around religious occasions, so we confirm the day before you go.
Plan on 60 to 90 minutes inside. The mosque centre also runs guided cultural tours of the building and its history, in Arabic and English, and the schedule and any fee are posted on the official site, so check them for your date. Our half-day tour budgets three to four hours in all, which leaves room for the courtyard, the prayer hall and the stops after it.
Can You Just Show Up? How to Register and Book Entry
Non-Muslims are welcome, and you do not need to be a guest of anyone. The official route is to book your entry slot on the mosque website (szgmc.gov.ae), no more than one month ahead, and arrive with your confirmation. Showing up without one is a gamble we do not recommend in peak months.
If you book with us, the entry fee is part of the per-car price, so send your date, your group size and your hotel on WhatsApp and we confirm the plan. Children under 3, over 60s and people of determination enter free.
Twilight on the facadeBest Time to Visit the Mosque and Avoid the Crowds
The honest answer is early. Arrive between 9:00 and 9:30 AM, finish by 10:45, and you have seen it before most coach groups reach the courtyard. The second-best window is the last two hours before closing, when the heat drops, the marble turns gold and the lighting around the domes comes on.
Midday is the weakest choice: the sun is harsh on white marble, the courtyard is hot underfoot and the lines are longest. Weekend afternoons and public holidays are busiest, and Friday morning is short. For an evening visit, tell us when you book and we time the whole route around it.
Getting There From Abu Dhabi and From Dubai
From the centre of Abu Dhabi it is a short drive of about 10 km, with free parking on site. From Dubai it is about 140 km, roughly 90 minutes each way, which is why many Dubai visitors prefer a private car over a coach with a long hotel-pickup loop. We run that route as its own tour: see the Abu Dhabi city tour from Dubai, priced at AED 1,500 per car in a sedan or 4×4 and AED 1,800 in a Land Cruiser.
Coming through the airport? Our Abu Dhabi airport layover guide and the Abu Dhabi stopover guide show how to fit the mosque between flights.
The reflecting poolsPhotography, Etiquette and Everything Else Inside
Personal photography is welcome throughout the courtyard and the hall, so bring a phone or camera. Professional filming needs a permit from the mosque, which matters if you were hoping to book a photographer for a shoot. Keep your voice low, do not point your feet at worshippers, and keep clear of anyone praying.
No food or drink is allowed inside, smoking is not permitted, and children must stay with a parent. Looking for a way to preview it first? A 360 virtual tour online is a fine way to learn the layout, but it cannot show the cool marble underfoot or the scale of the courtyard.
Private, VIP, Walking and Night Tours: Which Suits You
Private is our default: one car, one driver, your pace, no coach. VIP means the Luxury Lexus, a quieter ride with the same mosque visit. A walking tour happens inside the mosque, where the whole route is on foot, so the car is for the legs between stops. A night tour means pushing the visit to the last hours before closing so you see the lit domes; tell us your slot when you book.
Want to see more of the emirate? Pair the mosque with the full-day Abu Dhabi city tour, or add the evening skyline on our Abu Dhabi at night page.
Domes in golden lightWhat to Skip, and What to Do Instead
Not every shortcut helps at the mosque.
- Arriving at middaymeans heat, glare and the longest lines; go at 9:00 AM or in the last hours before closing instead.
- Waiting for the abaya queuecosts time in peak season; dress at the hotel and walk straight in.
- Squeezing in a second big attraction the same morningrushes both; give the mosque its full 75 minutes and keep the rest for the afternoon.
- Hunting for a phantom ticket officewastes the morning; book on szgmc.gov.ae, or let us confirm it with your booking.
Every extra stop you cut is time given back to the part of Abu Dhabi you came for.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Tour: FAQ
Is it free to enter the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque? Is there an entry fee?
Entry now carries a small fee: AED 10 for tourists and AED 5 for Emirates ID holders. Visitors over 60, children under 3 and people of determination enter free. On our private tours the entry fee is already included in the per-car price.
Can non-Muslims visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
Yes. The mosque welcomes visitors of every faith outside prayer times, provided they follow the dress code and the etiquette rules posted at the gate.
How long does a Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque visit take?
Plan on 60 to 90 minutes inside to see the courtyard, the pools and the prayer hall without rushing. Our half-day tour takes three to four hours in all, including Emirates Palace and the Corniche.
What are the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque opening hours and tour times?
Saturday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM. On Friday it opens to visitors from 9:00 to 11:30 AM and again from 2:30 to 8:30 PM. Hours can change around religious occasions, so we confirm them the day before your visit.
How do I register for entry to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
Book your slot on the official mosque website, szgmc.gov.ae, no more than one month ahead, and bring your confirmation. If you book a private tour with us, the entry fee is included, so send your date, group size and hotel on WhatsApp and we confirm the plan.
Can I visit the mosque without booking? Can I just show up?
Turning up without a booking is possible only when space allows, and in peak months it is a gamble. Booking ahead online, or through a tour that includes entry, removes the risk.
Can I wear jeans or shorts to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
Shorts are not allowed for anyone. Jeans are accepted only if they are loose and full length; tight or ripped jeans are turned away. The safest choice is loose, ankle-length trousers or a long dress, with sleeves.
What is the dress code at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
Everyone wears long, loose, ankle-length clothing that is not see-through. Women cover their hair with a headscarf, men wear long trousers and a shirt with sleeves, and shoes come off before the prayer hall. A free abaya loan is available, but the queue can be long in peak season.
What is the best time to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to avoid crowds?
Arrive between 9:00 and 9:30 AM, before the larger tour groups reach the courtyard. The last two hours before closing are the second-best window, with cooler air and golden light on the marble.
Can I go to the mosque at any time of day?
You can visit during opening hours, but not all hours are equal. Midday is the hottest and most crowded, Friday mornings are short, and the mosque may limit access around prayer times and religious occasions.
Are there free guided tours at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
The mosque centre runs guided cultural tours in Arabic and English. Check szgmc.gov.ae for the current schedule and whether a tour is included with your entry ticket. A private driver tour like ours is for transport and timing, and you can still join the official tour on site.
How do I book a Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque tour online?
Message us on WhatsApp with your date, the number of guests and your hotel. We confirm the plan and the exact price before you commit, with no deposit and free cancellation up to 12 hours before pickup. For entry only, use szgmc.gov.ae.

How do I get to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque from Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
From Abu Dhabi city centre it is about 10 km, a short drive. From Dubai it is about 140 km by road, around 90 minutes. A private car with a driver avoids the coach pickup loop and parking search.

Parking is free at the mosque. On our private tours your driver drops you at the entrance and handles the parking, so you walk straight in.
What private tour options are there for the mosque?
We run private half-day, six-hour and full-day tours by sedan, 4×4 or Land Cruiser, plus a Luxury Lexus. All are per car, not per person, with hotel pickup. See the cards above for each price.

You can visit in the last hours before the 8:30 PM closing, when the domes are lit. Tell us your preferred slot when you book and we build the route around it.

The mosque itself is explored on foot: the colonnades, the courtyard and the prayer hall. Your driver handles the legs between stops, and you set the walking pace.
Is there a 360 virtual tour of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
A 360 virtual walk-through is a useful preview of the layout before you travel, but it cannot reproduce the scale of the courtyard, the marble underfoot or the light. Visiting in person takes under two hours.
Can I hire a photographer at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
Personal photos on a phone or camera are welcome. Professional filming or a commercial shoot needs a permit from the mosque, so arrange that with the mosque directly before you go.

If we have to cancel, what happens?
A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.
If we have to cancel your booking – for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness – we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.
If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way – nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
