Usually yes, if your passport lets you enter the UAE: many nationalities are stamped in free, others arrange a transit visa through Etihad before flying. Leaving is worth it from about 6 hours between flights, because an hour goes on getting out and you should be back 3 hours before departure.

Yes, but inside paid spaces. The Pearl Lounge on Departure level 3, at the start of Pier D, is open to every traveller 24 hours a day and has private shower rooms; entry is about USD 72 (AED 265) for 3 hours. AUHotel, the airside transit hotel, has a shower in every room package, and the Etihad Business and First lounges have showers for eligible passengers. The airport does not list a free public shower.

Stay airside. Five hours leaves only about an hour outside once you allow for immigration and the return, so it is a lounge with a shower, a proper meal, or a 6-hour AUHotel room if you want to sleep.

Eight hours is where leaving starts to pay. Allow about an hour to get out and be back 3 hours before departure, and around 4 hours remain: enough for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, 25 minutes away, and the Corniche, if your passport lets you enter the UAE. If you stay airside, split the time between a 6-hour AUHotel room or the Pearl Lounge with a shower, a proper meal and the free spaces in Terminal A.

Yes. About 5 hours remain outside: the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan, Emirates Palace and the Corniche fit comfortably, or a short desert trip instead of the city.

Yes. Terminal A is open 24 hours with an airside hotel sold by the hour, a lounge open to every traveller, showers, free Wi-Fi and plenty of food, and the city’s biggest sight is only 25 minutes away.

Yes. AUHotel, airside in Terminal A, sells 6, 12 and 24-hour rooms and you check in with your onward boarding pass, no visa needed. For free, use Sukoon, the passenger relaxation area near Gate C42, with reclining chairs and complimentary blankets, open 24 hours. There are no enclosed sleep pods.

If one airline sold you the connection, it meets that airline’s minimum time, and the airport says Etihad-to-Etihad transfers can be as short as 45 minutes. You stay airside, clear transfer screening and walk to your gate. An hour is not enough to leave the airport.

Not when they are checked through to your final destination, which is normal on one ticket. On separate tickets you collect them, clear immigration and check in again, which needs hours and the right to enter the UAE.

Yes. Terminal A runs around the clock, and AUHotel, the Pearl Lounge and some food outlets stay open overnight for the many late arrivals and departures.

Yes. Passengers flying to the United States clear US immigration and customs in Abu Dhabi and arrive as domestic passengers, so allow an extra hour for it.

By the Airport Express coach on a timetable, by taxi, or by private car. The road trip takes about 75 to 90 minutes each way, so a Dubai visit only makes sense on a layover of 12 hours or more.

Yes. The UAE ranks among the world’s safest countries and Terminal A is staffed around the clock. Keep normal care of your valuables and leave a generous margin if you go into the city.

Yes, if you can enter the UAE. Allow about an hour to get out and be back 3 hours before departure, which leaves roughly 3 usable hours: enough for the Grand Mosque and the Corniche in a private car.

Six months. That applies to visa on arrival travellers and to the Etihad transit visa. A passport closer to expiry can still connect airside, but it may be refused at immigration.

Only when the buffer is thin. The real risks are a long passport queue, traffic on the way back, or bags that are not checked through. Leave with 6 hours or more, be back 3 hours before departure, and keep a private car or taxi waiting nearby.

Under 6 hours, stay in Terminal A. With 8 hours you have about 4 usable hours: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque first, then Qasr Al Watan or the Emirates Palace frontage and a Corniche drive. The Louvre and Yas Island need 10 hours or more between flights.

Go straight to the transfer desk airside in Terminal A, or your airline’s desk, before you think about leaving. On one ticket, the airline rebooks you onto its next suitable flight. On separate tickets the missed flight is usually your own cost, which is why we never plan a city run on a self-made connection without a wide buffer.
