Dubai Visa on Arrival

The five routes into the UAE without arranging anything in advance, the fees on the newest one, and why we will not publish a country list that goes stale.

Dubai Desert Safari Packages and Prices

After dubai visa on arrival, a sunset in the desert is an easy add-on. The Dubai desert safari page walks through the choices and pickup areas.

The short answer

There are five separate routes into the UAE without a visa arranged in advance, and which one applies to you depends on your passport, your other residence permits, and nothing else. They run from 14 days to 90 days, and two of them charge a fee.

We are not going to publish a list of countries. Every page above us on this search does, and those lists rot, the UAE revises them without warning. What we publish instead is how the system works and where the current list lives.

First four rows from the UAE Government portal, u.ae. Fifth row from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both read the day this page was written.

The newest route, and the rule people miss

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended visa on arrival to nationals of Indonesia, Viet Nam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa. This is the one most travel pages have not caught up with, and it has a condition that catches people out.

Your passport is not enough on its own. You must also hold “a valid residence permit issued by the United States, a European Union member state, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Singapore, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada”. Holding the passport without one of those residence permits does not qualify you.

Extendable?“may be extended once while the holder is in the UAE”“issued for a single stay and is not extendable”

FamilyAccompanying family members of eligible nationals may also apply

Note which way round the extension rule runs. The shorter visa is the extendable one; the 60-day is single-stay and final. If you want 60 days, you are committing to leaving at 60.

Why there is no country list on this page

Every result above us publishes one. We think that is the wrong thing to do, for a reason you can check yourself: the UAE revised these lists this year, adding six nationalities with conditions attached. A list copied into a blog post is accurate on the day it is written and quietly wrong afterwards, and nobody goes back to update it.

The current lists live in one place: the UAE Government portal at u.ae, on its visa-on-arrival page. That is the page to open before you book a flight. If a website shows you a country list and does not tell you when it was last checked, treat it as decoration.

The only list we will repeat is the one that just changed, because it is new enough that most pages have not added it: Indonesia, Viet Nam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa, and only with a residence permit from the US, an EU member state, the UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.

The passport rule that turns people away at check-in

The UAE government states plainly: “Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into the UAE.”

This is not a formality. Airlines check it before boarding, not on arrival, so a passport with five months left ends the trip at the departure airport. For the Indian route it goes further, the US visa, green card or UK or EU residence permit you are relying on must itself be valid “at least six months from the date of arrival into the UAE”.

Count the months before you book anything. It is the single most common reason a UAE trip does not happen, and it is entirely avoidable.

Overstaying, and what it costs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states an overstay fine of USD 16.35 / AED 60 per day for those exceeding the permitted duration on the new visas.

That is per person and it accrues daily, so a family of four a week over is a meaningful number. The 30-day route has a “10-day grace period for extension” built in; the 60-day does not, because it “is issued for a single stay and is not extendable”. Know which of those you are on before you plan a long trip.

The 3,000 dirham rule everyone asks about

We checked the UAE government portal and it does not publish a 3,000 dirham rule, or any cash-in-hand threshold you must show at immigration. The question is asked constantly and answered confidently all over the internet with numbers nobody sources.

So we are not going to give you a figure. What is true is that immigration officers anywhere may ask how you intend to support yourself, and a return ticket plus a hotel booking answers that. If someone quotes you an exact dirham amount, ask them which government page it came from.

Visa on arrival or transit visa?

If you are eligible for visa on arrival, use it. It is longer, cheaper or free, and you do not have to arrange anything before you fly.

The transit visa is for people who are not eligible and still want to leave the airport on a connection. It runs 48 or 96 hours and goes through your airline, the rules and the fees are on Dubai transit visa.

If you are staying airside and never clearing immigration, you need neither.

Once you are through immigration

The stamp is the slow part. What comes after it is where a first arrival goes right or wrong, so briefly:

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Dubai visa on arrival?

It depends only on your passport and any other residence permits you hold. GCC citizens need nothing. Some nationalities get 90 days on arrival, others 30 days with a 10-day grace period. Indian passport holders with a valid US visa, green card, or UK or EU residence visa get 14 days. Check the current lists on the UAE government portal, u.ae, before you book.

How long must my passport be valid for Dubai?

At least six months. The UAE government states “Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into the UAE.” Airlines check this at check-in rather than on arrival, so a short-dated passport ends the trip before you board.

Can the visa on arrival be extended?

It depends which one. The 30-day route comes with “a 10-day grace period for extension”. Of the new fee-paying visas, the 14-day “may be extended once while the holder is in the UAE”, while the 60-day “is issued for a single stay and is not extendable”.

What happens if I overstay in Dubai?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states “An overstay fine of USD 16.35 / AED 60 per day will apply”. It is per person and accrues daily, so a family overstaying a week is a meaningful amount. Know whether your route has a grace period before you plan a long trip.

What is the 3000 dirham rule in Dubai?

We checked the UAE government portal and it publishes no such rule and no cash-in-hand threshold. The figure circulates widely without a source. Immigration officers anywhere may ask how you will support yourself, and a return ticket plus a hotel booking answers that. If someone quotes you an exact amount, ask which government page it came from.

Do I need a visa if I am only transiting through Dubai?

Not if you stay airside and never clear immigration. If you want to leave the airport and you are not eligible for visa on arrival, you need a 48 or 96-hour transit visa arranged through your airline before you fly.

Is a visa on arrival better than a transit visa?

If you are eligible, yes, clearly. It is longer, free or cheaper, and needs no arrangement before you fly. The transit visa exists for travellers who are not eligible for visa on arrival but still want to leave the airport on a connection.

Do I need a hotel booking or return ticket to enter Dubai?

Neither is stated as a formal requirement on the UAE government portal, but both are what you would show if asked how you intend to support yourself and when you intend to leave. Having them on your phone costs nothing and removes the question.

Does a UAE visa on arrival cover all seven emirates?

Yes. Entry is granted to the United Arab Emirates, not to one emirate, so a visa obtained at Dubai International lets you travel on to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and the rest without anything further.

Where do I check the current visa rules?

The UAE Government portal at u.ae, and your airline. Those are the two that matter, and they are the only two we would rely on. Any travel site publishing a country list without a checked date, including this one if we published one, should be treated as out of date.

Which new countries were added to the UAE visa on arrival list?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that ordinary passport holders from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa may receive a visa on arrival if they hold a valid residence permit issued by the United States, a European Union member state, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada. Two options are described, a fourteen-day visa costing one hundred dirhams that may be extended once inside the country, and a sixty-day visa costing two hundred and fifty dirhams that is not extendable (mofa.gov.ae).

How many months must my passport be valid to enter the UAE?

Six. The UAE government portal states that passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the UAE (u.ae). The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office puts the same rule from the British side, saying your passport must have an expiry date at least six months after the date you arrive (gov.uk). flydubai repeats the six-month minimum measured from the date of travel (flydubai.com). Airlines apply this at check-in, so a passport with five months left can end a trip before it starts.

Can I extend my visa on arrival without leaving the UAE?

Sometimes, and the official sources are not identical here. The UAE government portal describes the thirty-day stamp as carrying a ten-day grace period for extension (u.ae), while Emirates states flatly that the thirty-day visa on arrival cannot be extended (emirates.com). We follow the government portal, because entry rules are set by the authorities rather than by carriers. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office says extensions are handled by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai and by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship elsewhere (gov.uk).

What is the fine if I overstay my UAE visit visa?

Overstaying is charged by the day. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announcing the newly eligible nationalities, states an overstay fine of fifty dirhams per day (mofa.gov.ae). The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office puts it more generally, warning that you could face fines for exceeding your authorised stay and that these may accumulate for each day of overstay (gov.uk). We publish no other figure, because published amounts change and only the immigration authority can confirm what you owe. Count your days from the entry stamp, not from your booking dates.

If we have to cancel, what happens?

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.

If we have to cancel your booking, for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness, we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.

This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way: nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
