Camp coordinates: approximately 25.224375, 55.561439, off the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44) at Al Awir. Open the camp location in Google Maps. The Red Dunes at Lahbab sit a little further along the same E44 corridor.

For a standard evening or morning safari, Al Awir and Lahbab are the practical, convenient choices, which is exactly why we operate there.

Al Awir: Our Camp and the Closest Desert to Dubai

Al Awir desert safari location, golden rolling dunes and camp near Dubai
Al Awir desert safari location, golden rolling dunes and camp near Dubai

Al Awir, sometimes spelled Al Aweer, is the desert area on the eastern edge of Dubai, about 35 to 40 km and 35 to 45 minutes from the city centre along the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44). It is the closest open desert to Dubai, which is its biggest advantage: a short transfer means less time on the road and more time in the dunes, and an easier trip for families, older guests and anyone who does not want a long drive.

The sand here is soft, golden and gently rolling rather than towering. That makes Al Awir ideal for a smooth, scenic dune-bashing ride, for first-timers and children, and for beautiful golden-hour photography, while still delivering the real desert feeling. Our own licensed camp sits in these dunes, with all the classic activities: dune bashing, camel rides, sandboarding, henna, Arabic costumes, a sunset photo stop, and in the evening eight live shows and a BBQ buffet dinner.

You may read on some operator sites that Al Awir is a lesser location. That usually comes from companies who only run the Red Dunes and want to steer you there. The honest truth is that Al Awir is the most convenient desert for Dubai and perfect for the most popular kind of safari, a relaxed evening of dunes, food and entertainment. If you want taller, more dramatic dunes, we also run the Red Dunes at Lahbab, so we have no reason to oversell one over the other. See our dedicated Al Awir desert safari page for the full experience.

Al Awir at a glance

Distance: 35 to 40 km from Dubai. Drive: 35 to 45 minutes. Terrain: soft golden rolling dunes. Best for: families, first-timers, the closest and easiest safari, golden-hour photos. Our own camp, with full evening shows and BBQ dinner.

Lahbab Red Dunes: The Dramatic Choice

Lahbab Red Dunes desert safari location near Dubai
Lahbab Red Dunes desert safari location near Dubai

Lahbab, home of the famous Red Dunes, lies about 45 to 50 km and 45 to 55 minutes from central Dubai, a little further along the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44). Its dunes are taller, steeper and a deep rust-red colour, coloured by iron-rich sand, and they form one of the most photographed desert landscapes in the country. We also run quads on these red dunes, and our quad biking Dubai page lists the prices and ways to get there.

This is the location to choose if you want more dramatic dune bashing, steeper climbs and descents, and striking red-dune photography. It is a favourite for thrill-seekers and photographers, and the slightly longer drive is part of the trade-off for the bigger dunes. We run safaris at Lahbab as well as Al Awir, so you can pick the landscape you want.

Because the experience and the setting differ, pricing for the Red Dunes at Lahbab is confirmed directly. Message us on WhatsApp and we will share the current Lahbab options and price for your dates, along with everything that is included.

Lahbab Red Dunes at a glance

Distance: 45 to 50 km from Dubai. Drive: 45 to 55 minutes. Terrain: tall, steep red dunes. Best for: dramatic dune bashing, photography, thrill-seekers. We run this location too, pricing on WhatsApp.

Pickup Location vs the Safari Location

Pickup point versus the desert safari location near Dubai
Pickup point versus the desert safari location near Dubai

An important thing many first-timers do not realise: your pickup point and the safari location are two different places. We collect you from your hotel or address in the city, then drive you out to the desert camp. You do not make your own way to the dunes.

We include hotel pickup from across Dubai. Some operators charge a surcharge for far-flung areas such as parts of Jebel Ali, Dubai Investment Park, Discovery Gardens or remote developments, because of the extra distance. We keep this simple, just tell us your exact pickup address when you book and we will confirm the time and whether your area is covered, with no surprises.

How to Reach the Dubai Desert: Routes and Roads

Routes and roads to the Dubai desert safari location
Routes and roads to the Dubai desert safari location

The desert zones around Dubai are reached on a few main highways. Knowing them helps you understand where each location sits, even if your driver does the actual navigating.

Route
Dubai-Hatta Road (E44)
Leads to
Al Awir, Lahbab Red Dunes, Big Red / Al Badayer
Route
Al Ain Road (E66)
Leads to
DDCR, Margham, towards Al Qudra
Route
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311)
Leads to
Connector across Dubai to the desert highways
Route
Emirates Road (E611)
Leads to
Northern connector towards Sharjah desert and Fossil Rock
Route
Sheikh Zayed Road (E11)
Leads to
Main spine towards Abu Dhabi and Liwa, far south

For our camp, the route is simple: out of the city onto the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44) towards Al Awir, then off the tarmac into the dunes. The whole transfer is around 35 to 45 minutes from central Dubai. Your driver handles every part of it, including the off-road section, which should only ever be driven in a proper desert-prepared 4×4.

Can You Drive Yourself to the Desert Safari?

You can drive a normal car to the edge of the desert, for example to the base of Big Red or to viewpoints near Al Awir, on the highway. But you should never drive an ordinary vehicle onto the dunes. Soft sand traps standard cars within metres, and dune driving without training, deflated tyres and recovery gear is genuinely dangerous, every season people are rescued, stuck or injured attempting it.

For a safari, the safe and easy answer is to let us pick you up. Our 4×4 vehicles are desert-prepared, our drivers are trained and licensed, and pickup and drop-off are included from your hotel. There is no parking to find, no risk of getting stuck, and no navigation, you simply enjoy the ride. If you specifically want to self-drive for the adventure, we offer a guided self-drive option where you follow in convoy with our lead vehicle, which is the only sensible way to take your own car into the dunes.

The honest bottom line on self-drive

Highway to the desert edge in any car: fine. Onto the dunes in a normal car: never, it is unsafe and you will get stuck. Best option: included 4×4 pickup, or our guided self-drive convoy.

Facilities at the Desert Location: Toilets, Signal and Access

Facilities at the Dubai desert safari camp location
Facilities at the Dubai desert safari camp location

Practical questions the other location guides skip, answered honestly for our camp.

Are there toilets at the camp? Yes. Our desert camp has clean, separate washrooms for men and women. This is standard at established camps like ours, though very remote, unmanned dune spots have no facilities at all.

Is there phone signal in the desert? At our Al Awir camp, close to the city, you generally have mobile signal and data, enough to message and share photos. Signal weakens the deeper into remote desert you go, so far-out zones like Liwa or Fossil Rock can have patchy or no coverage. Around Al Awir and Lahbab you are usually connected.

Is the desert safari location wheelchair accessible? The dunes themselves are soft sand, which is difficult for wheelchairs, but the camp seating area is flat and we can arrange a gentler experience. If you or a guest has mobility needs, tell us when you book and we will plan a comfortable visit, you can enjoy the camp, dinner and shows even if dune bashing is not suitable.

Is the desert safari safe? Yes, with a licensed operator. Our drivers are trained, our vehicles are maintained and desert-prepared, and the camp is fully set up. The risks come from unguided self-driving and unlicensed operators, not from a proper safari. See our safety approach for full detail.

Our Recommendation: Al Awir, the Closest Desert

Recommended Dubai desert safari location, our Al Awir camp
Recommended Dubai desert safari location, our Al Awir camp

After all the zones and comparisons, the simplest advice is this: for a desert safari from Dubai, our camp on the golden dunes of Al Awir gives you the best balance of everything. It is the closest desert, so the transfer is short and you spend more time in the dunes. The sand is soft and beautiful, ideal for families and photos. And it has a fully set-up camp with dune bashing, camel rides, sandboarding, eight live shows and a BBQ dinner in the evening.

If you want the taller Red Dunes, we run Lahbab too, so you are never pushed towards one location for the wrong reasons. We are the operator at both, with our own camp, our own vehicles and our own drivers, no agency in the middle, no commission, and no deposit. We send you the exact location pin once you book, and we bring you there.

Dubai Desert Safari Location: FAQ

Which location is best for a desert safari in Dubai?
For most visitors, Al Awir is best: it is the closest desert to Dubai, with soft golden dunes ideal for families and first-timers, and it is where our camp sits. For taller, more dramatic dunes, the Red Dunes at Lahbab are the upgrade, and we run safaris there too.
Where is the Dubai desert safari located, and what is the desert called?
Dubai desert safaris take place in the Arabian Desert surrounding the city. The nearest zones are Al Awir (about 35 to 40 km southeast) and the Red Dunes at Lahbab (about 45 to 50 km), both off the Dubai-Hatta Road. The wider desert is part of the Arabian Desert, which includes the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter.
How far is the desert safari from Dubai city centre?
The closest desert, Al Awir, is about 35 to 40 km and 35 to 45 minutes from central Dubai. The Red Dunes at Lahbab are about 45 to 50 km and 45 to 55 minutes. Conservation reserves and further zones range from 40 minutes up to two to three hours for distant Liwa.
How far is the desert from Deira?
Deira and Bur Dubai are among the closest areas, about 30 to 40 minutes drive to our Al Awir camp. Pickup is included.
What makes Lahbab and the Red Dunes different from Al Awir?
Al Awir has soft, golden, gently rolling dunes and is the closest desert to Dubai, ideal for families and a smooth ride. Lahbab, the Red Dunes, has taller, steeper, rust-red dunes about 10 km further out, better for dramatic dune bashing and photography. We run both, so you can pick the landscape you want.
Can I visit the desert location on my own without a tour?
You can drive a normal car to the edge of the desert on the highway, but you must never drive an ordinary car onto the dunes, it is unsafe and you will get stuck in soft sand. For a safari, the safe option is our included 4×4 pickup, or our guided self-drive convoy if you want to take your own vehicle into the dunes.
Which location has the best dunes for dune bashing?
The Red Dunes at Lahbab have the tallest, steepest dunes for the most dramatic dune bashing. Al Awir offers a smoother, gentler ride on rolling golden dunes, which many families prefer. Big Red / Al Badayer is also known for dune climbing and quad biking.
Which location is best for photography and sunset?
For striking red-dune photographs, Lahbab. For warm golden light and easy access, Al Awir. Both give a beautiful desert sunset, the dune colour and shape are the difference. We include a sunset photo stop on the evening safari at either location.
Which location is best for families with kids?
Al Awir, the closest desert, with soft rolling dunes, a short transfer and a gentle ride that suits children and older guests best. Our camp there has the full evening of camel rides, sandboarding, shows and dinner that families enjoy.
Which location is best for wildlife and eco-tourism?
The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) and Al Marmoom reserve focus on wildlife such as Arabian oryx and gazelle and protected desert, rather than dune bashing. These are run by reserve concession operators and are the eco-minded, premium choice.
Which location is best for budget or for luxury and private groups?
For budget, Al Awir as the closest desert offers the best value, with our evening safari from USD 10 / AED 35 self-drive or USD 14 / AED 50 by shared bus. For luxury and privacy, a private safari in your own 4×4 at Al Awir from USD 190 / AED 699 for up to six guests gives a premium feel without a reserve tour price. The Lahbab red dunes run on a private Land Cruiser at USD 272 (AED 999).
Are the desert safari locations wheelchair friendly and accessible?
The dunes are soft sand, which is difficult for wheelchairs, but our camp seating area is flat and we can arrange a gentler experience. Tell us when you book if you or a guest has mobility needs, and you can still enjoy the camp, dinner and shows even if dune bashing is not suitable.
Is there phone signal at the desert safari locations?
At our Al Awir camp, close to the city, you generally have mobile signal and data, enough to message and share photos. Signal weakens deeper into remote desert, so far-out zones like Liwa or Fossil Rock can have patchy coverage, but around Al Awir and Lahbab you are usually connected.
Do the desert camps have toilet facilities?
Yes. Our desert camp has clean, separate washrooms for men and women, which is standard at established camps. Very remote, unmanned dune spots have no facilities, which is another reason to visit with a proper operator and camp.
Can I do a desert safari from Abu Dhabi instead?
Yes. If you are in Abu Dhabi, our Abu Dhabi safari runs from our own camp in the Al Khatim desert, so you do not need to drive to Dubai. See our Abu Dhabi desert safari page for details.

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.
