Six things only a local camp can promise a transit guest
- Distance decides everything. Our camp is 45 to 55 minutes out; some camps at Al Fakka take about 2.5 hours each way.
- Airport to airport, private only: from USD 245 (AED 899) per car, or a Land Cruiser, the best experience, at USD 326 (AED 1,199).
- The dune drive is included and optional. It runs about 15 to 20 minutes, and you can skip it and ride straight to camp.
- Pregnant, or a bad back? We send a separate vehicle by road to the camp, with no dune bashing at all.
- Dinner is a halal BBQ buffet with Arabic and Indian dishes and plenty of vegetarian choice.
- Plan about 7.5 hours door to door for the evening run, and we keep the airport, not a hotel, as the finish.

Can I do a desert safari on a layover in Abu Dhabi?
Yes, with about 8 hours or more between flights and a passport that lets you enter the UAE. We collect you at Terminal A, drive to the Al Khatim dunes and have you back at departures 3 hours before take-off.
How many hours do I need for a layover desert safari?
Eight hours is the minimum: about an hour to get out, under an hour each way to the dunes, two to three hours on the sand, and 3 hours back at the airport before your flight.
How much is a layover desert safari from Abu Dhabi airport?

Is dune bashing safe on a layover?
Our drivers hold dune driving permits and have over 10 years of experience, vehicles are insured with a roll cage and seatbelts. If you prefer, ask for a gentle drive.
What if my inbound flight is late?
We track the flight. If the delay leaves too little time for the dunes, we switch to a shorter city plan or cancel at no charge, never risking your onward flight.
Do I need a visa for a layover desert safari?
You need to be allowed to enter the UAE. Many passports get a visa on arrival; others arrange a transit visa through Etihad. See our Abu Dhabi transit visa guide.
Is a layover desert safari worth it?
With 8 hours or more, yes: real dunes within an hour of the runway are something few hub airports offer. On a first visit with exactly 8 hours, weigh it against the Grand Mosque, which takes less time and is the city’s signature sight.
What should I wear for a desert safari on a layover?
Light, loose clothes, shoes you can shake sand out of, sunglasses and a cap. Sand gets everywhere, so keep a clean top in your hand luggage to change into before the next flight.
Is the layover safari private, or do we share with other guests?
The car is yours alone, from Terminal A to the dunes and back, with your bags locked inside. The dune drive is in your own vehicle too. At the camp you join the evening with our other guests, around the stage and the buffet, unless you add VIP sofa seating near the stage.
Can I do a desert safari on a morning layover?
Yes, if you land early. Our morning desert safari picks up between 5 and 8 AM and covers dune bashing and sandboarding without the evening camp, so it suits an early landing with an afternoon flight. Breakfast is not included, and the driver plans the return to Terminal A around your departure.
