Times calculated with the NOAA solar formula for the Al Khatim dunes (24.09 N, 54.88 E) and checked against timeanddate.com for Abu Dhabi; the dunes see the sun about two minutes before the city. Dawn low is the 1991 to 2020 average daily minimum at Abu Dhabi airport (NOAA); the open desert often feels cooler. Pickup from central Abu Dhabi.

Itinerary

A Sunrise Morning, Hour by Hour

A real run on 15 November, when the sun rises at 6:35 AM over Al Khatim. In December everything moves about 20 minutes later; in early March about the same as November.

Where you watch it

The Al Khatim Dunes, East of Abu Dhabi

Al Khatim lies east of the city on the road to Al Ain, and it is the nearest big dune field to the capital. That short drive is what makes a real sunrise possible from a 5 to 6 AM pickup. Some tours head to Al Fakka instead, about two and a half hours each way, which means leaving around 3:30 AM.

45 to 55 minutes

From central Abu Dhabi to the dunes on the E22. Yas, Saadiyat and Al Reem guests may leave a few minutes earlier.

Our own camp

Our Al Khatim camp sits in these dunes. Open it in Google Maps.

Open eastern horizon

The sun comes up over open sand, with no city glow in front of it.

Before you set the alarm

Dawn Temperatures, What to Wear and Photo Tips

The desert at 6 AM is a different place from the desert at 4 PM. Average dawn lows at Abu Dhabi run from about 14°C in January to 30°C in August.

November to February

A hoodie or light jacket. You will want it on the crest and take it off by 8 AM.

March, April and October

One long sleeve layer over a T-shirt, easy to peel off after sunrise.

May to September

Light, loose clothes. Dawn is already warm, and it is the coolest hour you will get all day.

Feet and face

Closed trainers or sandals you can kick off for sandboarding, sunglasses and a scarf for blown sand.

Sky first, sun second

The best colour comes in the 20 minutes before sunrise. Shoot the sky early, then turn and catch long dune shadows.

Phone ready

Charge it the night before and clear some space. Wide angle for the dunes, a slow pan for video.

What Goes Wrong on Sunrise Safaris, and How We Handle It

Summarised from Tripadvisor and forum reviews of sunrise tours in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Here is how ours works on each one.

The complaintWith us
“Picked up at 3:30 AM”Your pickup is worked out from the sunrise on your date, usually 5 to 6 AM.
“The sun was already up”The planner above tells you before you book whether your date gives first light or the golden first hour.
“Felt sick from dune bashing in the dark”Bashing comes after the sunrise, in daylight, and only if you want it.
“Breakfast was a box of biscuits”We say it upfront: no breakfast is served, so you eat what you like before pickup.

“Quad price was a surprise”Quad and buggy prices are printed on this page and in your written quote.

Honest advice

Back by about 10 AM with the whole day free for meetings, the Grand Mosque or the beach.

Families with early risers

Child seats on request, a gentle dune drive and small quads for kids. No late night.

Couples

A quiet crest, the two of you and the sun coming up. Ask for a slow, gentle morning.

Family morning out

Avoid these

Five Sunrise Safari Mistakes

Expecting first light in July

The sun rises around 5:40 AM; from a 5 AM pickup you get the golden hour, not the dawn. Check your date in the planner.

No warm layer in winter

Fourteen degrees and a breeze on a crest feels cold. Bring a hoodie from November to February.

A big breakfast before dune bashing

Eat light, or tell your driver to keep the dune drive gentle.

Booking the morning after a late flight

A 5 AM alarm after a 2 AM landing ruins both. Leave one night in between.

Choosing a tour that drives 2.5 hours

Ask where the sunrise is watched. Al Khatim is under an hour; Al Fakka means a 3:30 AM start.

Your Sunrise, Planned by a Licensed Abu Dhabi Operator

We drive our own 4x4s into the Al Khatim dunes every morning and evening, from our Abu Dhabi office at Al Sila Tower on Al Maryah Island. Royal Arabian Safari Tourism LLC is DCT licensed and has operated in the UAE since 2015. These are the six things our drivers tell sunrise guests.

Two guests watching the sun low over the dunes
Guests on a crest at sunrise time.
  • Leave the city in the dark. Pickup runs from 5 AM and you choose the time. From November to March 5 to 6 AM catches the sunrise; your driver messages you on WhatsApp before he arrives.
  • Al Khatim, not Al Fakka. Al Khatim is 45 to 55 minutes east on the Al Ain road. Camps out at Al Fakka are about two and a half hours away, which is why some tours collect at 3:30 AM.
  • The sun moves along the horizon. In December it comes up in the east-southeast, around 115 degrees; in June far round to the east-northeast, around 64. Your driver picks the crest to match.
  • Dawn is the cool hour. Average lows at Abu Dhabi run from about 14°C in January to 30°C in August (NOAA, 1991 to 2020). The desert usually feels a little cooler than the city.
  • Winter gives the real sunrise. From November to mid March the sun rises after 6:25 AM at Al Khatim, so a 5 to 6 AM pickup reaches the crest in time for first light.
  • No breakfast, by design. We serve no meal at sunrise. Eat something light before pickup, carry water, and save breakfast for your hotel at 10 AM.

Questions

Sunrise Desert Safari Abu Dhabi FAQs

How much is a sunrise desert safari in Abu Dhabi?

Our private sunrise safari is USD 218 (AED 799) for the whole car, sedan or 4×4, up to 7 guests, or USD 272 (AED 999) in a Land Cruiser, which gives the best experience. With seven guests that is about USD 31 each. Add-ons are priced per machine: a quad from USD 27 (AED 100), a Can-Am buggy USD 218 (AED 800) for half an hour.

What time is pickup for a sunrise safari?

You choose: pickup runs from 5 AM, and 6, 7, 8 or 9 AM is fine too. To see the sun come up from the dunes we suggest about 5:30 to 5:45 AM in December and January and 5:00 to 5:15 AM in November and March. From April to October the sun rises before 6:10 AM, so even a 5 AM pickup gives you the golden first hour rather than first light.

What time is sunrise in Abu Dhabi?

It ranges from about 5:32 AM in June to 7:05 AM in mid January. Late October is about 6:25 AM. At the Al Khatim dunes, east of the city, the sun appears about two minutes earlier than in the city centre.

How long does the sunrise safari take?

About 4 to 5 hours door to door: pickup 5 to 6 AM, about an hour on the dunes around sunrise, dune bashing and sandboarding, and back at your hotel around 9:30 to 10:30 AM. A quad or buggy adds about 30 minutes.

Is breakfast included on the sunrise safari?

No. No breakfast or meal is served on the sunrise safari. Eat something light before pickup and bring water and a snack.

Is there a camel ride at sunrise?

Yes, a camel ride is possible on the sunrise safari. Tell us when you book and we arrange it at our Al Khatim camp after the sunrise. There is no camel farm stop on our Abu Dhabi safaris.

Is a sunrise or a sunset safari better?

Sunrise is quieter, cooler and better for photos, and it leaves your day free. Sunset comes with the camp, dinner and shows. If you want both the dunes and the evening, see our evening vs morning comparison.

Is the sunrise safari good for children?

Yes. Ask for a child seat when you book and it is fitted before pickup. After sunrise your driver takes the dunes slowly, and children of 5 or 6 can ride a small quad with a parent next to them.

Is the dune drive safe at sunrise?

Our drivers hold desert driving permits, the vehicles are insured and every seat has a seatbelt. Dune bashing is optional; if anyone is pregnant or has back or heart problems we advise skipping it and drive straight to the sunrise point by the gentle route.

Can we add a quad bike or buggy after the sunrise?

Yes, after the sunrise. Pick a quad in the controlled area (USD 27, AED 100, 20 to 30 minutes), a 30 minute ride in the open dunes (USD 54, AED 200), or half an hour in a Can-Am buggy (USD 218, AED 800) with a guide riding next to you on a quad.

Where does the sunrise safari go?

To the Al Khatim dunes, 45 to 55 minutes east of Abu Dhabi on the Al Ain road (E22), where our own camp is. It is the nearest big dune field to the city.

Can you pick us up from the airport or the cruise terminal for sunrise?

Yes, at the same price. We pick up anywhere in Abu Dhabi city, including the cruise terminal and Zayed International Airport. Staying in Dubai? See our Dubai sunrise safari.

Is a sunrise safari worth the early alarm?

For most guests, yes: the dunes are cool, quiet and empty, the light is the best of the day for photos, and you are back at your hotel by about 10 AM with the day still free. If you would rather sleep in and enjoy a BBQ and shows, the evening safari suits you better.

Is a sunrise safari OK in summer?

Yes. Dawn is the coolest hour of a summer day, with average lows of about 27 to 30 degrees, and you are back before the midday heat. From April to October the sun rises before 6:10 AM, so a 5 AM pickup gives you the golden first hour rather than first light.

I get car sick. Can the driver go gently?

Yes. The car is private, so you set the pace: tell your driver to keep the dune drive gentle, stop whenever you like, or skip it and go straight to the sunrise point and the sandboarding slope. Eat light before pickup.

Is the car comfortable for 7 people?

Up to 7 guests fit in a sedan or 4×4, and the Land Cruiser gives the most legroom and the smoothest ride on the dunes, which is why we call it the best experience. Child seats are available on request.

What should I wear for a sunrise safari?

A warm layer from November to February, light loose clothes from May to September, closed trainers or sandals, sunglasses and a scarf for blowing sand.

How do I book a sunrise safari and pay?

Send your date, hotel and group size on WhatsApp, +971 58 228 2683. We confirm the pickup time for your date, the car and one total in writing. No deposit; you pay the driver on the day by cash or card, and you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup.
