Al Khatim sits east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 (Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Road) toward Al Ain, roughly between the settlements of Al Khatim and Al Khaznah. Coordinates commonly cited for the safari area are approximately 24.25 degrees North, 55.02 degrees East. Drive time depends on where you start:

Here’s something worth knowing before you book: you’ll also see this area called “Al Khaznah”, the two names sit along the same E22 corridor, and some operators use them interchangeably for the same camp while others may run separate sites in the same general dune belt. If an operator can’t tell you plainly which one their camp actually sits in, that’s worth asking before you pay.
The Dunes and Landscape
Al Khatim’s dunes are taller and steeper than the flatter sand you see closer to the city, shaped over centuries by prevailing winds into long ridges and rounded “bowl” hollows. The sand sits on ancient alluvial plains washed down from the Hajar and Oman mountains over geological time, which is part of why the dune fields here grew as large as they did. Photography is best in the hour around sunrise and the 45 minutes before sunset; the flat overhead light between roughly midday and 3pm washes out dune contours.
One listing selling tours in this area claims dunes here reach 934 feet, about 285 metres. That would make Al Khatim taller than Moreeb Dune at Liwa, the tallest dune in the UAE at roughly 300 metres and the only dune in the country in that class. It isn’t. Al Khatim is a genuinely good, accessible dune field close to the city; it is not the Empty Quarter, and it doesn’t need an inflated number to be worth the drive.
Al Khatim or Liwa? Quick answer
Al Khatim is an hour from Abu Dhabi city and works well for a half-day or evening trip. Liwa, in the Empty Quarter, is a 2 to 2.5 hour drive with genuinely bigger dunes (Moreeb Dune runs to around 300 metres) and is the pick for a dedicated overnight desert trip rather than a same-day add-on. If you searched “Al Khatim” planning a wedding or corporate event rather than a safari, you’re not lost, this area is also used as a venue for large private desert events, up to a few hundred guests depending on the site. That’s a different booking entirely from a tour package: it needs a venue operator, catering and event permits, not a desert safari company. Worth knowing before you call the wrong number.
Booked a “Dubai Desert Safari”? Check If It Secretly Runs Here
Here is something the cheap listings do not spell out. A large share of budget “Dubai desert safari” deals do not use a dune belt near Dubai at all. They drive guests south into the Abu Dhabi desert corridor, and the Al Khatim belt is one of the areas they use, because the dunes are better and the land is quieter. For you that means a transfer of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way from a Dubai hotel, often in a shared van waiting to fill every seat before it leaves.
None of that is wrong in itself, and the dunes at this end are genuinely worth the drive. But you deserve to know the real geography before you book, because it changes three things: how long your day actually is, how much of it you spend sitting in traffic on the E11 and E22, and whether a Dubai pickup or an Abu Dhabi pickup makes more sense for you. Royal Arabian Safari operates under a Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi tourism licence. If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way: nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
