Liwa Desert Safari Abu Dhabi: Quick Answer
A Liwa desert safari is a full-day expedition from Abu Dhabi into the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali), the largest continuous sand desert on Earth, to ride the world’s tallest mega-dunes, conquer the legendary Moreeb Dune, explore the Liwa Oasis and camp under a brilliant desert sky. It is a bigger, wilder, more remote experience than a city-edge safari, roughly a two-hour drive south of Abu Dhabi.
Liwa is 240 km away. Most of the tours sold on this search cannot fit in their own clock.
Liwa is not the standard evening safari with a longer drive. It is the edge of the Rub’ al Khali, the Empty Quarter, described by Abu Dhabi’s own tourism board as the largest desert in the emirate and the biggest continuous sand desert in the world. Source: visitabudhabi.ae. The dunes are on a different scale entirely, and so is the driving.
That distance is the whole problem with this SERP, so here is the arithmetic nobody publishes properly. From Abu Dhabi city it is roughly 240 km each way, about two and a half hours in each direction, five hours of driving before anyone has looked at a dune.
Now hold the page-one products against that:
One operator states “6 hours easy” in one section and “4 hours” in another, same product, same page. Another gives the same 20-hour figure to two different products, a self-drive safari and a trekking-and-camping tour, and leaves its Empty Quarter overnight with no duration at all.
Our position: a genuine Liwa day is ten to twelve hours door to door, of which about five is driving. Anything materially shorter is either not going to Liwa or not stopping there. If someone sells you Liwa in six hours, ask them to show you the drive time.
What you actually go to Liwa for
The reason to spend five hours in a car is Moreeb Dune, Tal Moreeb, one of the largest and steepest dunes in the world, and the reason the region hosts hill-climb competitions. Alongside it sit the palm groves and forts of the Liwa Oasis itself, and the empty horizon of the Rub’ al Khali, which is genuinely different from the dunes 45 minutes outside the city.
If what you want is dune bashing, a camel and a camp dinner, you do not need Liwa and we will tell you so, the standard evening safari does that far better for the time and the money. Liwa is worth it when the landscape is the point: the scale, the silence, sunrise or sunset over dunes that run to the horizon, and photography you cannot get anywhere closer to the city.
The right months are November to March, when it is cool enough to be out in it. (visitabudhabi.ae.) In high summer a Liwa day is endurance, not pleasure, and we would rather move your date.
How we sell it
Per vehicle, so the number does not change with your group and children add nothing, though a ten to twelve hour day with five hours of driving is genuinely long for small children, and we will say so before you book rather than after. Child restraints are fitted free; in the UAE a child up to four must be in a child safety seat and a front-seat passenger must be at least 145 cm and at least ten years old. (u.ae.)
Free cancellation up to 12 hours before pickup, no deposit, no booking fee, payment on the day. And a real hour count, with the drive time stated separately from the time on the ground, because on this particular product that is the only honest way to quote it.
When not to book Liwa
Do not book it if you have one day in Abu Dhabi, you will spend half of it on the E11 and see none of the city. Do not book it with young children unless you are confident about the drive. Do not book it in July or August unless you have done desert heat before. And do not book it at all if what you actually want is the camp evening with dinner and shows: that is the standard safari, it is cheaper, it is closer, and it is the better night for most people.
What Is the Liwa Desert Safari?
If a standard Abu Dhabi safari is the desert’s greatest hits, Liwa is the whole symphony, an epic, full-day journey into the heart of the Empty Quarter.
Liwa sits on the northern edge of the Rub al Khali, the vast sand sea that stretches across the south of the Arabian Peninsula. This is the desert of legend: endless apricot mega-dunes, some rising over 100 metres, rolling to the horizon in every direction. Where our Al Khatim safaris deliver the classic experience close to the city, a Liwa safari takes you deep into raw, remote wilderness that feels a world away from anywhere.
Because Liwa is around a two-hour drive south of Abu Dhabi, it is a proper day trip, or, better still, an overnight expedition. Royal Arabian Safari runs Liwa trips as private, guided adventures so you get the mega-dunes, the oasis and the culture without the logistics headache. It is the desert at its most cinematic, and the ultimate bucket-list drive for anyone who has already tasted the city-edge dunes and wants something bigger.

Your Full-Day Liwa Safari: Hour by Hour
A Liwa safari is a proper adventure day. Here is how a typical private full-day trip unfolds; timings flex with the season and your pace.
Early morning: Pickup and the drive south
Your guide collects you from Abu Dhabi in a comfortable 4×4 and heads south along the E11/E45 toward the Al Dhafra region. The drive itself is part of the experience, the landscape gradually shifting from city to open gravel plains to the first towering dunes of Liwa.
Late morning: Arrival and first dune bashing
You reach the edge of the mega-dunes, the guide deflates the tyres, and the real adventure begins: an exhilarating dune-bashing session across sands far larger than anything near the city.
Midday: Moreeb Dune and photo stops
You visit the legendary Moreeb Dune, take in the scale of the Empty Quarter, and stop for photographs at some of the most dramatic viewpoints in the UAE.
Afternoon: Liwa Oasis, Fort and camel farms
Beyond the dunes, Liwa is a living oasis. You can visit date-palm plantations, the historic Liwa Fort, and traditional camel farms, a glimpse of the culture that has sustained life here for centuries.
Evening: Sunset, camp and (optional) overnight
As the sun sets over the mega-dunes, you settle at a desert camp for refreshments, a BBQ and, on overnight trips, a night under a sky thick with stars before a desert sunrise and the drive home.

Liwa Safari Prices
Because Liwa is a full-day, long-distance expedition rather than a short city-edge tour, trips are private and tailored to your group, dates and whether you want a day trip or an overnight. We confirm your exact quote when you book. For reference, our standard Abu Dhabi safari transfers start at the rates below, Liwa full-day and overnight expeditions are quoted on request.

Liwa Safari Prices Compared: and the Per-Person Maths
No two Liwa operators quote on the same basis, some price per person, some per car, some per 4 or per 6 guests, and two of the top-ranking websites belong to the same operator yet quote different prices and durations for the same tour. Here is every page-one price, normalised:
The same operator listing the same tour at USD 490 / AED 1,800 on one website and USD 450 / AED 1,650 on another is the clearest proof on this page: always ask what the price covers, per whom, on which day, and get it in writing on WhatsApp.
How to Vet a Liwa Operator Before You Pay
This search result page is a masterclass in why checking matters. Among the top-ranking “operators” right now: a website still carrying its template’s Lorem-ipsum testimonials and an example.com contact email; testimonial photos taken from a stock-avatar generator; a “5.0 rating” based on exactly one vote; and sister websites of one operator quoting different prices for the same tour. Five checks before you pay anyone (including us):
- Licence: ask for the tourism licence name and check the operator’s legal company matches the website.
- Reviews you can verify: open the Google or TripAdvisor profile yourself, do not trust widgets on the site.
- Price basis in writing: per person or per car, which days, what is excluded, on WhatsApp, before paying.
- Cancellation terms: the going terms on this page are 24–48 hours or no-refund; ours is free up to 12 hours, with no card needed to book.
- A real phone number: a UAE +971 number that answers, not a placeholder.
Liwa Desert Safari Abu Dhabi: FAQ
Distance decides more than most people expect: how far the dunes really are from the city, whether Liwa is worth the extra drive, and coming from Al Ain instead.
How far is Liwa from Abu Dhabi?
Liwa is roughly a two-hour drive south of Abu Dhabi city, in the Al Dhafra region on the edge of the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali).
How long does a Liwa safari take?
A full-day Liwa safari typically runs around 10 hours including travel, sightseeing and activities. Overnight trips add a desert camp and sunrise.
What is Moreeb Dune?
Moreeb Dune (Tel Moreeb), the “Mountain of Fear,” is one of the tallest dunes on Earth at about 300 metres with a slope near 50 degrees, famous for the Liwa International Festival and the Moreeb Hill Climb.
Is Liwa better than a city desert safari?
It is bigger and wilder, with mega-dunes and remote scenery, but it is a longer day. City-edge safaris are quicker and easier; Liwa is the epic expedition for those wanting the grandest desert.
Can I camp overnight in Liwa?
Yes. Overnight Liwa safaris include a desert camp, dinner and stargazing before a sunrise and the drive home, the ultimate Empty Quarter experience.
What’s the best time to visit Liwa?
October to April, when the weather is comfortable. The deep desert is very hot in summer, so the cooler months are strongly recommended.
What activities are included?
Mega-dune bashing, sandboarding, Moreeb Dune, Liwa Oasis and forts, camel farms, and optional overnight camping and stargazing.
How much does a Liwa safari cost?
Because Liwa is a private full-day or overnight expedition, it is quoted on request for your exact group. Standard city-edge safari transfers start from USD 10 / AED 35. Message us for an instant Liwa quote.
Is Liwa suitable for families?
Yes, with planning, it is a long day, so it suits families with older children who enjoy adventure. Dune-bashing intensity is fully adjustable, and we tailor the pace to your group.
Do you pick up from Dubai?
Yes, transfers from Dubai can be arranged for an additional charge. Just ask when booking.
Where exactly is Liwa?
Liwa is a crescent of villages and date plantations in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, roughly 250 km south-west of Abu Dhabi city. It sits on the northern rim of the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter, and is the last inhabited area before that sand sea takes over completely. The main town is Mezaira’a.
How tall are the Liwa dunes?
The dunes around Liwa are the tallest in the United Arab Emirates. Moreeb Dune reaches approximately 300 metres with a 50-degree slipface, and several neighbouring dunes exceed 200 metres. For comparison, the Al Khatim dunes used for standard Abu Dhabi evening safaris rise over 100 metres.
Do I need a 4×4 to visit Liwa?
Not to reach Liwa itself or the base of Moreeb Dune, the roads are tarmac and a normal car is fine. You only need a 4×4 to drive on the sand, and dune driving in Liwa is genuinely serious terrain that requires deflated tyres, recovery gear, a support vehicle and real experience. If you want the sand, come with a licensed operator.
Is there mobile signal in Liwa?
Generally yes in the villages and near the main roads and Moreeb Dune, but coverage becomes patchy once you drive into open desert. Do not rely on it for navigation off the tarmac, and tell someone your plans before heading into the dunes.
First-Timer Tips for a Great Liwa Day
A little preparation makes the long day effortless and the experience unforgettable.
- Start early, an early pickup maximises your time among the dunes and beats the heat.
- Eat a good breakfast, it is a long, active day; keep your energy up.
- Bring more storage than you think, you will photograph far more than you expect.
- Dress in layers, warm days can turn into cool evenings, especially on overnights.
- Stay hydrated, the deep desert is dry; drink water regularly throughout the day.
- Tell your guide your priorities, Moreeb, oasis, culture, photography or thrills, and we shape the day around you.
Ready to Conquer the Empty Quarter?
Ride the world’s tallest dunes, stand beneath Moreeb, and camp in the greatest sand desert on Earth. Message Royal Arabian Safari for your private Liwa quote.

Liwa vs Al Khatim, Which Desert to Choose
As a local operator running tours in both, we can be honest about the trade-off. The Al Khatim desert is around 45 minutes from Abu Dhabi city and perfect for a half-day morning or evening safari when time is limited. Liwa is roughly a two-to-three-hour drive south, so it suits travellers who want the biggest dunes, an overnight desert camp, or a full-day expedition into the Empty Quarter. If your priority is convenience, choose Al Khatim; if your priority is the most dramatic desert in the country, Liwa is worth the extra distance. Many guests combine a night in Liwa with a morning drive back.
Booking Your Liwa Desert Safari
Because of the distance and the scale of the dunes, a Liwa safari is best done privately with an experienced desert driver who knows this terrain. Royal Arabian Safari runs private Liwa tours, full-day Empty Quarter expeditions and overnight desert camps, with pickup arranged from Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Prices are confirmed upfront based on your group size, duration and whether you add camping, and there is no online prepayment, you pay on arrival. To plan a Liwa trip, message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and we will build the itinerary around the dunes and experiences you most want to see. You can also compare a closer option on our Al Khatim desert guide or add a night under the stars with an overnight desert safari.
Best Time to Visit Liwa and What to Bring
The most comfortable months for a Liwa desert safari are October to April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and evenings in the dunes are cool enough for an overnight camp. Sunrise and late afternoon are the best hours for photography, when the low sun rakes across the giant dunes and shadows bring out their scale. In summer, early-morning and overnight trips remain rewarding thanks to cooler night air, and the desert is at its quietest.
For a day trip, bring sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, a light scarf for blowing sand, closed shoes for climbing dunes, and plenty of water, though refreshments are provided. If you are staying overnight, pack a warm layer for the surprisingly cold desert night and a power bank for your camera. Because our Liwa tours are private, your guide can tailor the pace, stops and timing to your group, whether you want an adrenaline-filled dune-bashing run over Moreeb Dune or a slow, scenic day of photography deep in the Empty Quarter. Message us with your dates and we will recommend the ideal timing for the experience you are after.
