Dubai Layover Guide what to do in 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours
Under six hours on the ground, stay airside. From six hours you can see Old Dubai; from eight, Downtown; from twelve, the desert; from twenty-four, all of it with a bed in between. This guide gives each block the real arithmetic, immigration, the drive, the buffer, plus fares, visa rules, luggage and terminals, every figure sourced and dated. That is USD 27 per person when seven share one car (USD 190 per car).
The quick answer, by how long you have
Under six hours on the ground, do not leave the terminal. Immigration, the drive in, the drive back and the buffer at the gate will eat all of it. From six hours you can do Old Dubai and the souks. From eight, Downtown and the Burj Khalifa as well. From twelve, the desert with dinner, or the city by night. From twenty-four, all of it with a hotel bed in the middle.
Layover vs stopover: a layover is a short connection and a stopover is a planned stay of a day or more. Can you leave the airport? Often yes, depending on your passport; for a last minute plan, send your flight times on WhatsApp and we tell you honestly what fits. See the layover tour.
Three things decide whether any of it works: whether you can enter on your passport, which terminal you land in, and what happens to your bags. All three are answered further down, with the official figures and the dates they were checked.
| Time on the ground | Usable city time | What genuinely fits | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 6 hours | Under 1 hour | Nothing outside the terminal | Stay airside |
| 6 to 8 hours | 2 to 3 hours | Old Dubai, the creek crossing and the souks | Go, but pick one area |
| 8 to 10 hours | 4 to 5 hours | Half-day city loop, or Downtown at leisure | Comfortable |
| 10 to 14 hours | 6 to 9 hours | Full city day, or a desert safari with dinner | The sweet spot |
| 14 to 24 hours | 10 to 18 hours | City by day, desert by evening, hotel nap between | Book a room |
| Over 24 hours | A full day or more | Everything above, plus Hatta or a beach morning | Treat it as a short trip |
If you want the booked version of any row, the plans are at the top of this page and the detail sits on our Dubai airport layover tour page.
4-hour layover: the honest answer is no

How it goes when people try it. Our drivers get asked for the four-hour run more often than any other, and we turn it down more often than any other. The maths does not bend: four hours minus ninety minutes at the front minus three at the back is negative. Even a perfect run, Smart Gate in six minutes, empty road, driver waiting, leaves you standing in a souk for twenty minutes with one eye on your phone. Nobody enjoys that, and the risk sits entirely on you.
The checklist
- Time budget: 4 h connection β roughly 0 usable city hours.
- Cost if you insist: airport taxi starting fare USD 5 each way plus the meter, or a private car plan from USD 190 per car, which needs a connection of seven hours or more. You are paying to sit in traffic.
- Risk: one slow immigration bank and you are running for the gate.
- Go / no-go: No go.
What to do instead
Stay airside and use the airport properly. There are pay-per-use lounges, shower rooms, quiet rooms and a genuinely large duty-free floor. If the four hours is the front half of a longer stop, sleep now and take the city later. And if the bags are the problem rather than the time, the counters are covered in the luggage section below.
6-hour layover: Old Dubai, and only Old Dubai

How the six-hour run actually goes. This is the tightest run we will consider, and only after we check your flight times, and the route almost never changes, because there is exactly one part of Dubai that repays ninety minutes. You land, clear immigration, and the car is on the kerb about an hour and a half after touchdown. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes later you are in Al Fahidi, walking wind-tower lanes that were the whole city a lifetime ago. You cross the creek on an abra, a wooden water taxi, minutes not hours, and come out in the spice souk, then the gold souk. It smells of cardamom and diesel and it is the only bit of Dubai that feels like a port. Then straight back. No Downtown, no Palm, no detour.
The checklist
- Time budget: 6 h connection β about 1.5 usable hours. Eight hours makes this comfortable rather than tight.
- Route: Al Fahidi β abra across the creek β spice souk β gold souk β back to DXB.
- Costs, doing it yourself: nol Red ticket USD 1 to 8.50 depending on zones, abra a couple of dirhams, taxi back from a starting fare of USD 5 plus the meter. Budget roughly USD 16 to 90 all in for two people, plus whatever you buy.
- Costs, driven our shortest fixed plan is the 4-hour tour from USD 190 per car, and it needs a seven-hour connection. At exactly six hours, send us your flight times on WhatsApp and we tell you before you book whether a creek-only run is safe.
- Risks: the souks thin out in the early afternoon; some stalls close for a few hours. Midday in summer is genuinely punishing on foot.
- Go / no-go: Go, if you accept that you are seeing one neighbourhood, not a city.
The booked version of this run is the four-hour plan on our Dubai airport layover tour page.
8-hour layover: old and new in one loop

How the eight-hour run goes. This is the one our drivers run most, and the first block where the day stops feeling like a raid. Same start, landside about ninety minutes after touchdown, then Old Dubai first while the light is good and the heat is manageable: Al Fahidi, the abra, the souks. Back in the car along Sheikh Zayed Road, where the skyline does the thing it does in photographs. A stop at the Dubai Frame or Jumeirah Mosque depending on your mood, Burj Al Arab from the beach road, then Downtown: the Burj Khalifa from the outside, the mall if you want air conditioning, and the fountain if your timing lands on a show. Then back with three hours in hand.
The checklist
- Time budget: 8 h connection β about 3.5 usable hours. Ten to twelve hours makes this genuinely relaxed.
- Route: Al Fahidi β abra β souks β Sheikh Zayed Road β Frame or Jumeirah Mosque β Burj Al Arab photo stop β Downtown and the fountain.
- Costs, doing it yourself: metro and taxi hops will run USD 27 to 150 for two, and you will spend a chunk of the day waiting rather than seeing.
- Costs, driven the 4-hour plan is USD 190 per car, or USD 272 in a Land Cruiser. Luggage carried, return timed to your flight.
- Risks: peak traffic between 07:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 can add half an hour each way. The fountain runs on a fixed schedule, you either land on it or you do not.
- Go / no-go: Go. This is the block that converts a connection into a memory.
12-hour layover: the desert, or the city after dark

How the twelve-hour run goes. Twelve hours is where the choice opens up, and our drivers will ask you one question: sand or city? If your gap covers late afternoon and evening, take the desert. You leave the terminal around four, are on the dunes by five, and the drive itself is the ride, a Land Cruiser working a red dune face, then a camel photo, then the sun going down somewhere flat and enormous. Dinner and shows at the camp, back in the city by ten. If your gap is overnight instead, invert it: Downtown after dark, the fountain lit, the Marina at blue hour, and a hotel room for four hours of actual sleep before the morning bank.
The checklist
- Time budget: 12 h connection β about 7.5 usable hours. Enough for one big thing plus a meal, not two big things.
- Option A, desert roughly 6 hours door to door. From USD 218 per car, or USD 272 in a Land Cruiser.
- Option B, city by night the 12-hour overnight plan, USD 354 per car, or USD 463 in a Land Cruiser. Hotel extra.
- Costs, doing it yourself: a desert trip is not realistically self-driveable on a layover, you would be renting a 4Γ4 and taking on dune driving with a flight to catch. Do not.
- Risks: a rushed safari is a bad safari. If your gap is under about eleven hours, take the city instead.
- Go / no-go: Go. Pick one, not both.
24-hour layover: treat it as a short trip

How the twenty-four-hour stop goes. Past about fourteen hours the honest advice changes: stop optimising and book a hotel room. The guests who enjoy this most do the city in the morning while it is cool, sleep through the worst of the afternoon heat, then take the desert or the Marina in the evening. The ones who try to stay awake for twenty-four hours arrive at their onward flight wrecked and remember none of it. A room near the airport for one night costs less than the tour and doubles what you get out of the day.
The checklist
- Time budget: 24 h β roughly 18 usable hours, of which you should spend four asleep.
- Morning: Old Dubai and the souks before the heat. Afternoon: hotel, or the mall and the aquarium if you would rather stay out. Evening: desert camp, or Downtown and the fountain.
- Or go further: Hatta is ninety minutes east, dam, fort, mountains, several degrees cooler in summer. From USD 326 per car.
- Costs, driven a full-day city tour is USD 245 per car and an evening desert safari starts at USD 218 per car. Both are priced per car, not per person.
- Risks: trying to fit Abu Dhabi in as well. It is ninety minutes each way and it turns a good day into a bus tour. Pick one emirate.
- Go / no-go: Go, and sleep.
If your stop is longer than a day, you are not really on a layover any more, the plans on our Dubai stopover tour page are built for 24, 48 and 72 hours with a hotel in the middle.
DXB Layover Activities: Where to Go First, by the Hour You Land
The same city asks for a different first move at dawn than at dusk. Pick the row that matches your landing time, then count the overhead from the plans above before you commit to it.
| You land | Your first move | What is open | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 04:00 to 08:00 | Old Dubai first: Al Fahidi and the Creek in cool air. | Metro Red Line from 05:00 (Sundays 08:00). Most souk shops open later in the morning. | Jumeirah Mosque is not open yet. Its guided sessions run at 10:00 and 14:00, Saturday to Thursday. |
| 08:00 to 12:00 | Creek, abra and souks, then the coast. | The abra costs AED 1 per person. The souks are open and the light is good for Burj Al Arab. | Jumeirah Mosque is closed on Fridays, so most layover guests see it from outside. |
| 12:00 to 16:00 | Indoors first: Dubai Mall and Downtown, Old Dubai later. | Fountain afternoon shows at 13:00 and 13:30 (Fridays 14:00 and 14:30). | Midday heat on foot in summer. Save the Creek walk for the last light. |
| 16:00 to 21:00 | Creek at golden hour, then Downtown after dark. | Fountain every half hour from 18:00 to 23:00, Burj Khalifa lit. | The evening rush slows Sheikh Zayed Road, so we run Old Dubai first and Downtown second. |
| 21:00 to 04:00 | A night run by car: Downtown, Palm Jumeirah and Marina. | Metro runs to about midnight (Fridays 01:00). Fountain until 23:00. | Most indoor attractions are shut, so this is a drive and photograph plan. |
The Museum of the Future closed on 1 September 2026 and is due to reopen in early 2027, so it is a photograph from the road for now. If you would rather have the route built for you from your two flight numbers, our Dubai airport layover tour does exactly that, with the clock times worked out backwards from your boarding call.
Visa and entry: can you leave at all?

Nothing else on this page matters until this is settled. We are a tour operator, not a visa service, we take no visa fees and we promise no approvals. What follows is what the UAE government portal at u.ae published on the day this guide was written.
Flying Emirates? The Emirates Dubai stopover page explains the free hotel offer and who qualifies.
| Who you are | What the official portal says | What it means on the ground |
|---|---|---|
| GCC citizen | No visa or permit required; present a GCC passport or national ID card | Walk straight out |
| On the 30-day visa-on-arrival list | Visa on arrival valid 30 days, with a 10-day grace period for extension | Issued at the counter; nothing to arrange first |
| On the 90-day visa-on-arrival list | Visa on arrival valid 90 days | Same: Issued on landing |
| Indian passport with a valid US visit visa, US green card, or UK or EU residence visa | Visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 14 days, document valid at least six months | Carry the qualifying document, not just the passport |
| Everyone else | Entry permit arranged in advance | Sort it before you fly, or stay airside |
Every passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. The same official page carries its own warning, which we will repeat rather than paper over: eligibility lists change, and travellers are told to check with the UAE embassy in their own country before travelling. Re-read it in the week you fly. Do not trust any tour operator page, including this one, as the last word on your own eligibility.
Where other guides get this wrong. Transit visa fees are published by airlines and by the immigration authority, and they differ between Dubai and Abu Dhabi because different authorities issue them. We have seen figures republished from blogs and forums that were out by a factor of four. If a page quotes you a fee without naming the source and the date it was read, do not trust the number.
Luggage: what to do with your bags

If your bags are checked through to your final destination, skip this section, you are carrying a cabin bag and the question does not arise. If you collect them at the belt, you have three options.
One: the airport counters. Dubai International has staffed left luggage in all three terminals, landside on the arrivals level, open around the clock. Prices are per bag per twelve hours or less, not per day, the single most misquoted fact on this subject.
| Terminal | Operator and location | Standard bag | Oversized or valuable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terminal 3 | Emirates Left Luggage, arrivals level near Exit 1, behind the Boots pharmacy | USD 10 | USD 11 |
| Terminal 1 | dnata Baggage Services, arrivals level near Boots and Etisalat | USD 11 | USD 14 |
| Terminal 2 | dnata Baggage Services, arrivals area | USD 11 | USD 14 |
A standard bag is defined by dimension rather than weight: up to 21 by 24 by 11 inches. Anything larger, or anything you declare as valuable, moves to the higher rate. Bags come back from the counter you left them at, if you arrive and depart from different terminals, do not use this option.
Two: your hotel. If you have a room booked on either side of the gap, the bell desk will hold luggage for nothing. This is the cheapest correct answer and most people forget it.
Three: keep them in the car. On any driven plan the bags ride in the locked boot with the driver while you walk around, at no charge. For two bags over twelve hours that is USD 19 to 100 you do not spend, and no handover to schedule.
The full breakdown, porter rates, wrapping, what the official pages do not publish, is on our Dubai airport luggage storage page.
Getting into the city: costs, times and what to actually pick

Fares below are from the RTA’s own pages, read on the day of writing. One honest gap: the RTA publishes starting fares but not the per-kilometre rate, the minimum fare or the waiting charge. So the taxi figures here are starting fares plus the meter, and anyone quoting you an exact per-kilometre total is guessing.
| Option | What it costs | Time to Downtown | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metro (nol Red ticket) | USD 1 one zone, USD 2 two zones, USD 2.50 three or more | 40 to 55 min plus walking | Solo travellers, tight budgets, peak traffic | Does not run all night; you still walk at both ends |
| Metro (nol Silver) | USD 1 / 5 / 7.50 by zone | As above | Anyone making more than a couple of trips | Card costs extra to buy |
| Airport taxi | Starting fare USD 5 saloon, USD 7 van, plus the meter | 25 to 50 min | Two or more people, or any bags | Peak traffic; you queue again for the return |
| E-hail app | Starting fare USD 2 off-peak, USD 4 peak, USD 3 overnight, plus the meter | 25 to 50 min | Coming back from the city | Surge at the airport; finding the pickup point |
| Private car and driver | From USD 190 for the whole run | 25 to 50 min, no waiting either end | Groups, families, anyone carrying bags, tight connections | Costs more than a taxi if you are solo |
The rule of thumb. Alone with a cabin bag and plenty of time, take the metro. Two or more people, or any luggage, and the taxi maths closes fast, you are paying two starting fares plus two meters plus two queues. Past three people, or any real time pressure, a car that waits for you is cheaper than the taxis and dramatically cheaper than a missed flight.
One thing we could not verify. Dubai Airports’ own transport pages were unreachable when this guide was written, so we are not going to tell you which metro station serves which terminal from memory. Check the RTA journey planner on the day. If that matters to your plan, it is another argument for a car that meets you where you actually land.
Terminals: why T2 changes the plan
DXB has three terminals and they are not interchangeable. Which one you land in changes the walk, the price of your left luggage and, if you are moving between them, your whole time budget.
| Terminal | Who flies there | What it means for a layover |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal 3 | Emirates and its partners | The largest of the three, with an internal train between concourses. Add time for the walk. Cheapest left luggage of the three. |
| Terminal 1 | Most other international carriers | Straightforward. Arrivals exits close to the pickup area. |
| Terminal 2 | Regional and low-cost carriers | On the opposite side of the airfield. If you land at T2 and depart from T1 or T3, that inter-terminal transfer is part of your budget and it is not five minutes. |
The trap: arriving and departing from different terminals. It affects your buffer, and it rules out the left-luggage counters entirely, because bags come back from the counter you left them at. If that is your situation, carry the bags or put them in a car that can meet you wherever you finish.
Re-entry. Coming back into the terminal you clear security again, and at peak departure banks that queue is real. It is one of the four reasons our buffer is three hours and not two.

Your Dubai Layover, Planned by a Licensed Local Operator
Every layover is different, so we plan from your two flight times, not from a template. We are a DTCM-licensed Dubai operator with our own drivers and desert camps, and these are the points our team checks with layover guests before anyone leaves the terminal.

- Licensed in DubaiA DTCM-licensed operator, part of Royal Arabian Safari Tourism LLC, in the UAE since 2015.
- Our desert campsAl Awir, 50 to 55 minutes from the city, and Lahbab, about 1 hour 10. See Al Awir on Google Maps
- Permit-holding driversDune-driving permits, 10+ years at the wheel, insured vehicles.
- Answered at any hourOur team replies on WhatsApp 24/7, from booking to boarding.
Six things we check before you leave DXB
- Your two flight numbers come first. We read the landing time, the terminal and the departure time, then tell you honestly whether a trip fits. On the day, your driver messages you at DXB on WhatsApp with his standing location.
- No dirhams needed. You pay the driver on the day, in cash in any currency or by card (a card fee applies). Nothing is taken in advance.
- Travelling with children. A child seat is fitted on request, so tell us the ages when you send your flights. With small children, pick one area rather than a string of stops.
- Wheelchair users are welcome. A private car is a must, so message us before booking and we set the car up for you.
- Check official advice, not old forum posts. Before you leave the airport, read your own government’s travel advice and your airline’s flight status. If plans change, you can move or cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup.
- Tipping is optional. Our drivers never ask for a tip; it is entirely your call.

Dubai layover questions, answered
Can I leave the airport during a layover in Dubai?
Yes, if you are eligible to enter the UAE on your passport. The left-luggage counters and the exits are landside, so you clear immigration first. If you are not eligible, or you have not checked, stay airside.
Is a 6 hour layover enough time to leave the airport?
Just. Six hours on the ground leaves roughly ninety minutes in the city once immigration, the drive in, the drive back and a three-hour terminal buffer are subtracted. It is enough for Old Dubai and nothing else. Under six hours, do not leave.
If I have an 8-hour layover in Dubai, can I leave the airport?
Yes, and eight hours is the first genuinely comfortable block. It gives about three and a half usable hours, which covers Old Dubai and Downtown in one loop without rushing either.
Do I need a transit visa for a 6 hour layover in Dubai?
Only if you leave the airport and your nationality is not on a visa-on-arrival list. Staying airside needs no entry permit. Check the UAE government portal at u.ae for your passport before you fly; eligibility lists change.
Can you leave Dubai Airport for a 12 hour layover?
Yes. Twelve hours gives around seven and a half usable hours, which is the first block where a desert safari with dinner fits, or a full evening in the city.
Does Emirates give free hotels for a long layover in Dubai?
Not automatically. Emirates Dubai Connect can provide a complimentary hotel, transfers, applicable meals and a 48-hour UAE visa, but only when no better connection exists and your itinerary qualifies. Add it under Manage Booking at least 12 hours before your inbound flight to Dubai (Emirates terms say 24 hours), ask early. If you do not qualify and still want to see the city, a private car plan is the fallback.
What can I do with a 24 hour layover in Dubai?
Treat it as a short trip. Roughly eighteen usable hours, of which four should be sleep. City in the morning, hotel in the afternoon, desert or Downtown in the evening.
How much does it cost to get from Dubai airport into the city?
By metro, a nol Red ticket is USD 1 for one zone, USD 2 for two and USD 2.50 for three or more. An airport taxi starts at USD 5 for a saloon and USD 7 for a van, plus the meter. Dubai Taxi Company lists about AED 2.62 per km on top of that, so treat any exact taxi total as an estimate.
Can I store luggage at Dubai Airport during a layover?
Yes, in all three terminals, landside on the arrivals level, around the clock. USD 10 for a standard bag in Terminal 3 and USD 11 in Terminals 1 and 2, per twelve hours or less. Bags come back from the counter you left them at.
What is the difference between a layover and a stopover in Dubai?
A layover is a short connection, usually under 24 hours, where you mostly stay in or near the airport. A stopover is a longer planned stay, often a night or more, that airlines sometimes package with a hotel. Airlines draw the line differently, so check your own ticket.
Can I book a city tour during a short layover in Dubai?
Yes. A private car can meet you at DXB arrivals with a name board and run the route around your connection time, with your luggage staying in the car. Tell us your landing and departure times on WhatsApp and we shape the plan.
Can a Dubai layover include a desert safari?
Only on a long gap, because a safari needs far more time than a city run. Send us your flight times and we will tell you honestly if it fits; our airport desert safari page explains the timing.
Can you visit Dubai on a layover, and can transit passengers leave the airport?
Often yes, depending on your passport, visa and connection time. Under six hours on the ground, stay airside; from six hours you can see Old Dubai. Check the official UAE immigration site or your airline for entry rules before you go.
Do I need a visa to transit through Dubai airport?
If you stay airside you normally do not need a visa to connect. If you want to leave the airport, visa rules depend on your nationality, and airlines such as Emirates and flydubai can arrange short transit visas. Confirm with your airline.
What are good things to do in Dubai during a layover?
From six hours you can see Old Dubai; from eight, Downtown; from twelve, the desert; and from twenty-four hours, all of it. Choose your plan by how long you have on the ground.
Which layover tours from Dubai airport are best?
The best layover tour is one built around your flights: a private car from the arrivals hall, a plan sized to your hours, and a firm return time to the airport. Ours are private plans for 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours.
Can I combine an airport transfer with city sightseeing on a layover?
Yes. A private car meets you at arrivals, tours the city, and returns you to the airport in time for your flight.
What can I do inside Dubai Airport on a layover?
If you stay airside, DXB has Dubai Duty Free, paid lounges with showers, sleep pods and the airport hotel in Terminal 3 for a few hours of rest, quiet zones, prayer rooms and free Wi-Fi. Staying in is the right call for gaps under about 6 hours or arrivals after midnight; with more time, leaving the airport is usually worth it.
Is a layover in Dubai safe right now?
We will not give you a blanket yes or no from a tour page. Check your own government’s travel advice (the UK’s is here) and your airline’s flight status on the day you fly. If anything changes, a booking with us can be moved or cancelled free up to 12 hours before pickup, and nothing is paid in advance.
What can I do on a 7 hour layover in Dubai?
Treat it like the 6-hour plan. Once immigration, the drive and the return buffer are taken out, you have about 2 to 3 hours of city time. That fits Old Dubai: Al Fahidi, an abra across the creek and the spice and gold souks. Leave Downtown and the Palm for a longer stop.
What can I do on a 15 hour layover in Dubai?
You have roughly 10 hours outside the airport, which is enough for the city by day and the desert by evening, with a hotel nap in between if you land early. The other way to use it is Old Dubai in the afternoon and Downtown and the fountain after dark.
Can I do a Dubai layover with kids?
Yes, if every child can enter on their passport and you keep the plan simple: one area, door to door. In our private car a child seat is fitted on request and the car waits while you walk, so tell us the ages when you send your flight times on WhatsApp.
Where can I sleep on an overnight layover in Dubai?
If you cannot or do not want to enter the UAE, the Dubai International Hotel is inside the Terminal 3 departures area, and the hotel says no transit visa is needed to stay there. If you can enter, a hotel near DXB in Deira or Garhoud keeps the morning run short. After a late landing, a bed first and the city in the morning usually works best.
Is a 2 hour layover in Dubai enough to leave the airport?
No. Two hours is connection time, not sightseeing time. Stay airside, follow the transfer signs to your departure gate and use what is left for food or a lounge.
Emirates passengers: check Dubai Connect before booking a hotel.

Nice tour with Ikram
βWe visited iconic landmarks like Burj Khalifa, the Al Fahidi Historical District, the Gold Souk, and the Spice Souk. At every stop, Ikram shared interesting stories that brought each place to life. What I appreciated most was his personal touch, he patiently answered all questions, managed time perfectly, and even suggested local food and shopping spots that made our experience more authentic.β
