Abu Dhabi Bus Tour vs Private Car: The Short Answer

The Big Bus is USD 75 / AED 275 to 336 per person on a fixed loop. Our private car is USD 190 / AED 699 flat for the whole vehicle, same Corniche, same Emirates Palace, plus the two stops the bus route never reaches.

  • How much is the Big Bus Abu Dhabi tour? +: The Big Bus Abu Dhabi hop-on hop-off tour costs around USD 75 / AED 275 per person for a 24-hour pass, and roughly USD 92 / AED 336 per person for 48 hours (about USD 48 to 53).
  • How long does the Abu Dhabi bus tour take? +: A full loop of the Big Bus City Tour (Red Route) takes roughly two hours without getting off.

Abu Dhabi Bus Tour: Quick Answers

How much is the Big Bus in Abu Dhabi?
Marketplace prices run roughly USD 75 / AED 275 per person for a day pass and about USD 92 / AED 336 for the 48-hour Essential ticket. A family of four pays USD 300 / AED 1,100+ before entry tickets.
What does a private car cost instead?
USD 190 / AED 699 per car (up to 7 guests) for a half-day, one flat price, hotel pickup, and the driver waits at every stop.
What route does the bus take?
A fixed city loop of roughly 1 hour 50 minutes with stops near the Corniche, Heritage Village and Emirates Palace, plus a Grand Mosque shuttle leg.
What does the bus route not reach?
The stops guests ask for most, see the comparison below, a private car covers every one of them in the same half-day.
Which is better for families?
Per-person bus pricing multiplies by every seat; a per-car price does not. Four or more people are almost always cheaper private.
Can I do this from Dubai?
Yes, the bus cannot pick you up in Dubai, but our private car does. Dubai pickup is quoted on WhatsApp, still per car.

Should you take the bus or a private car? Nobody on this search will tell you

We sell private cars, so read this knowing that. It is also true that not one of the twelve results on page one for this search contains an honest bus-versus-car comparison, the bus operators do not make one because they sell buses, and the resellers do not make one because they sell tickets. So here is ours, including the cases where the bus wins.

Take the bus if…
You are one or two people. Per head it is genuinely cheaper and it is the right buy.
Take a private car if…
You are four or more. Per car pricing overtakes per-seat pricing at about four people and is not close at six.
Take the bus if…
You want to wander and improvise across a whole day, getting on and off as the mood takes you.
Take a private car if…
You have a fixed window, a cruise call, a layover, an afternoon, and cannot spend it waiting at a stop.
Take the bus if…
The open top deck and the commentary are part of what you came for.
Take a private car if…
You are travelling with young children, shopping, or a wheelchair, where reloading at every stop is the real cost.
Take the bus if…
You are happy to be on the route rather than on your own route.
Take a private car if…
You want stops the bus does not serve, or want to stay somewhere longer than the timetable allows.

Being blunt: if you are a couple who wants to potter around the Corniche all day, buy the bus ticket. We will not pretend otherwise to win a booking.

The bus numbers do not agree with each other

If you do take the bus, buy on the timetable rather than the headline, and check it, because the pages selling these tickets contradict one another and sometimes themselves. All of the following is quoted from live pages read today.

Frequency. One seller says the Red Route runs every 30–40 minutes. Another says the same Red Route arrives every 90 minutes. Those cannot both be true, and the difference decides whether hop-on-hop-off is a pleasure or an hour on a kerb.

Loop length. One says the Red loop is 90 minutes non-stop. Another says two hours. Same bus, same route, thirty minutes apart.

Stop count. Two sellers say 13 stops; a third contradicts itself within its own page.

The last bus. Nobody on page one publishes a final departure time. One gives an operating window, Red 09:00–17:00, Green 10:00–16:30, and no last bus; another gives a first bus at 09:30 and explicitly no last one. That is the single most important number on a hop-on-hop-off ticket, because missing the last bus turns a cheap day into a taxi fare from wherever you happened to get off.

The verdict

One or two people, two or three days, happy to wander: take the Big Bus. It is cheaper, it is well run, and the top deck in winter is a pleasure. Buy it directly from Big Bus Tours, we make nothing from telling you this.

Three or more people, one day, or travelling in summer, or with children: take a private car. It is cheaper from three guests, it removes two to three hours of waiting, it collects you from your hotel, and it puts a person in the front seat who can answer a question.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Abu Dhabi bus tour and the private-car alternative.

How much is the Big Bus Abu Dhabi tour? +
The Big Bus Abu Dhabi hop-on hop-off tour costs around USD 75 / AED 275 per person for a 24-hour pass, and roughly USD 92 / AED 336 per person for 48 hours (about USD 48 to 53). It runs a 14-stop City Tour (Red Route) plus a Grand Mosque route, with a top deck and a multi-language audio guide. Prices are per person, so a family of four pays around USD 300 / AED 1,100 for 24 hours.
Is a bus tour or a private car cheaper in Abu Dhabi? +
The bus is cheaper for one or two people. A private car is cheaper from three people up. At USD 75 / AED 275 per person, three Big Bus tickets cost USD 225 / AED 825; our private 4×4 half-day is USD 190 / AED 699 for the whole vehicle. Six people: USD 450 / AED 1,650 on the bus, still USD 218 / AED 799 with us. The crossover is at three guests, and it is not close after that.
Should I take the Big Bus or a private tour? +
Take the Big Bus if you are travelling solo or as a couple, you are in Abu Dhabi for two or three days, and you like wandering at your own pace with no schedule. Take a private car if you are three or more people, you have one day, you want hotel pickup rather than finding a bus stop, or you want a driver-guide who answers questions rather than an audio track.
How long does the Abu Dhabi bus tour take? +
A full loop of the Big Bus City Tour (Red Route) takes roughly two hours without getting off. Because it is hop-on hop-off, most people spread it over a day or two, buses typically run every 30 to 45 minutes, so each stop you make adds that wait to your day. A private car covers the same landmarks in 4 to 8 hours with no waiting at all.
Does the Big Bus go to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque? +
Yes: Big Bus runs a dedicated Grand Mosque route in addition to the City Tour (Red Route), and you change between them. Note that the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque charges a small entry fee on any tour. What differs is how you get there and how long you can stay: on a private tour we drive you directly, arrive before the 10:00 crowd, and wait as long as you like.
What are the downsides of the hop-on hop-off bus? +
Honestly: the waiting. Buses run every 30 to 45 minutes, so a day with four stops can lose you two hours standing at bus stops. You also make your own way to the first stop: there is no hotel pickup. In summer, when Abu Dhabi exceeds 42°C, the open top deck is genuinely punishing and standing at an unshaded stop is worse. And the commentary is a recorded audio track, not a person you can ask a question.
Is the Big Bus good in summer? +
Less so. Abu Dhabi routinely exceeds 42°C from June to September, and humidity can push the felt temperature past 50°C. The bus has an air-conditioned lower deck, but the top deck, the reason to take it, is exposed, and you will still be standing at unshaded stops waiting for the next bus. This is the season where a private, air-conditioned car with door-to-door pickup is worth a great deal more than it costs.
Do you sell Big Bus tickets? +
No. We are not a reseller and we do not take a commission on anyone else’s product. If the Big Bus is the right choice for you, and for solo travellers and couples it often is, buy it directly from Big Bus Tours or an authorised seller. We sell one thing: a private vehicle with a driver-guide, priced per car.
What is the cheapest way to see Abu Dhabi’s landmarks? +

It depends on your group size. Travelling alone or as a couple, the hop-on hop-off bus is usually the cheapest sightseeing option. From three people up, a private car at USD 190 / AED 699 flat for the whole vehicle costs less per head than per-person bus passes, and it includes hotel pickup, so you also skip taxi fares to the first bus stop.

Still have a question? We reply within minutes.

Booking With Us: Common Questions

Is the bus or a private car better value? +
One or two people: the bus, genuinely. Four or more: a private car, because per-car pricing overtakes per-seat at about four people and is not close at six. We sell cars and we still say that, because not one of the twelve results on page one for this search makes an honest comparison either way.
How often do the buses actually run? +
Check before you buy, because the sellers disagree. One says the Red Route runs every 30 to 40 minutes; another says the same route arrives every 90 minutes. That difference is what decides whether hop-on-hop-off is a pleasure or an hour on a kerb.
How long is a full loop? +
One seller says the Red loop is 90 minutes non-stop, another says two hours. Same bus, same route, thirty minutes apart, so budget the longer figure.
What time is the last bus? +
Nobody on page one publishes one. One seller gives an operating window of 09:00 to 17:00 on the Red route and no final departure; another gives a first bus at 09:30 and explicitly no last bus. It is the most important number on the ticket, because missing it turns a cheap day into a taxi fare from wherever you got off.
How much is a child ticket? +
Also unpublished. One seller states child tickets exist for ages 3 to 11 and gives no rate; another repeats the claim with no figure. On a family product that is the number people came for. With us children add nothing at all, because we price per car.

If we have to cancel, what happens?

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.

If we have to cancel your booking, for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness, we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.

This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way: nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
